Who is Dr. Olayemi Cardoso?

Recently, the Senate confirmed Olayemi Cardoso as the new Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. It was announced on Wednesday that the Nigerian Senate headed by Godswill Akpabia has confirmed Dr. Olayemi Cardoso as the new Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. It was revealed that apart from him, four other candidates have been confirmed for appointment to the positions of CBN Deputy Governor namely Emem Nnana Usoro, Muhammad Sani Abdullahi Dattijio, Philip Ikeazor and Dr. Bala M. Bello. Cardoso was reportedly re-assumed as acting CBN governor last week, pending his vetting and confirmation by the Senate. However, his confirmation was met with congratulations by former Bayelsa East Senator, Ben Murray-Bruce, who described it as a transformative period for Nigeria.

It was confirmed that in response to questions from members of the Senate during the confirmation process, Cardoso outlined his plans to address the lack of stability in foreign exchange markets. However, he expressed his intention to prioritize clearing the CBN’s foreign exchange without settlement anytime soon. Moreover, Shehu Sani, former senator of Kaduna Central shared his expectations from the new CBN governor through social media. Furthermore, Sani called on Cardos to save the naira and restart the country’s monetary policy avoiding political rice farmers. However, the new leadership team in place at Apex Bank is expected to manage its affairs for the next five years.
