Eminem and Scott married on June 14, 1999, before he left for his first tour. However, things have been difficult for the couple since the beginning of their marriage.

During a 2007 episode of Dr. Keith Ablow’s talk show, Scott said she married Eminem to keep him “faithful and grounded” when he was on tour, but it didn’t work out.

By 2001, the couple had quit their jobs. However, they remarried on January 14, 2006, in a “small, private ceremony” in Michigan, according to the rapper’s representative, Dennis Dennehy. “Family and close friends were present,” he told PEOPLE.

Soon after, Eminem filed for divorce in April 2006, which was settled out of court in December of the same year.

“There was a lot of sadness about why this didn’t work out. They’ve been together for 17 years,” her attorney, Michael J. Smith, told PEOPLE. “They are lifelong friends, lovers, they were husband and wife, they raise children together… There is no end and it is not over between them.”

Smith continued, “Kim is great. She’s a very articulate, very smart woman. She’s going back to college to study design. She just wants to be a mom and go back to college. That’s what she wants to do right now.”

She struggled with depression

After her second divorce from Eminem, Scott mostly stayed out of the spotlight, but she also struggled with substance abuse and depression.

On October 7, 2015, she intentionally crashed her Cadillac Escalade into a utility pole after consuming prescription pills and a fifth of Malibu rum.

“I was sitting at the end of the road where I knew nobody but me was going to get hurt,” she later revealed speaking on 95.5 WKQI’s Mojo in the Morning. “Yes, I was drinking, I was taking pills and I hit the gas and aimed at the pole.”

She added: “I never expected to get out of it alive. I apologized profusely. I didn’t expect to survive it and I said [police] that I tried to do it on purpose.”

The accident resulted in a concussion, broken toes and a broken wrist. Scott was charged with DUI, for which she was ordered to attend drug and alcohol counseling, serve a year of probation and pay a $900 fine, according to News from Detroit.

She and Eminem are focused on co-parenting

Despite divorcing as a couple after a decade together, Scott told Detroit radio show Mojo in the Morning that their children are their top priority.

“We’re really close friends, we’re just trying to raise our kids together and make it as normal as possible for them,” she said in 2016 about her relationship with the artist.

She will become a grandparent

Hailie and her husband Evan will welcome their first child together in 2025 — making Scott a grandmother for the first time. The couple announced the happy news on Instagram in October 2024, sharing sonogram photos.
