During her relationship with Fortune Feimster, Jacquelyn (Jax) Smith discovered that being with a stand-up comedian means that your life becomes part of the comedy. Feimster and Smith married in 2020, and as the actress previously shared with PEOPLE, she’s using her story with Smith on her show to spread a positive message.

“I want people to know that me and Jax are just like everybody else,” she said while talking about her 2022 special. Happiness. “We happen to be gay, but our story isn’t that different from other people’s stories. I want the uniqueness to be something everyone can relate to. You don’t have to be gay to relate to an engagement story.”

The The Mindy Project star added: “A lot of men come up to me after the show and say, ‘Oh my God, the proposal was the most nerve-racking thing for me,'” she said. “It’s nice to be able to connect with them on yes.”

After meeting in 2015, Feimster and Smith got engaged in 2018 and married in 2020. The two have been sharing their relationship on social media, and have also discussed working together — for example, Smith was an executive producer on Feimster’s comedy special forces. However, they mostly write about hanging out with their Pomeranian Biggie.

They met at the Pride celebration

Feimster and Smith met at Chicago Pride in June 2015 — the day after the Supreme Court Obergefell v. Hodges The decision legalized same-sex marriages throughout the country.

“It was love at first sight, baby!” Feimster told PEOPLE in October 2022, “We met by chance in the parking lot, because Pride commands different parks and areas. I was only there for 10 minutes when we met, and we met all night.”

Smith added, “Right away, we were at ease with each other.”

In June 2020, Feimster posted on Instagram about their five year anniversary. “I never thought I’d A) find someone I wanted to marry and B) be legally allowed to,” she wrote in part. “But five years ago today, the day after marriage equality passed, I went to Chicago Pride and immediately met Jax. She appeared out of nowhere and it seemed as if I had known her forever.”

At first they were at a distance

When Feimster and Smith met, Smith was living in Chicago, while Feimster was in California. So, their relationship was long-distance in the beginning. After a year, Smith moved in with his girlfriend.

“It was a big act that said, ‘I want this to work. I believe in us,'” Feimster told PEOPLE.

They got engaged in 2018

Feimster and Smith got engaged during a trip to Big Sur, California in January 2018.

“After two and a half years with my beautiful lady, she is officially my feyoncé,” Feimster wrote on Instagram at the time. In his own post, Smith shared, “A few days ago Fortune asked me to join her on a magical Big Sur adventure….yes, yes, a thousand times yes. #engaged.”

Feimster referred to Beyoncé with her spelling “feyoncé,” but noted in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), which is no longer available, that not everyone got the reference. “My favorite response to this post so far was from someone who was mad at me because they thought I didn’t know how to spell fiance,” she posted. “But seriously, thank you for all the love.”

They had a small wedding

Smith and Feimster decided to marry in October 2020, during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. In an interview with PEOPLE, they explained that they had always wanted to get married that year, so they decided to have a small wedding rather than wait any longer.

“We just decided because we don’t know when this will be over and it’s just too hard to plan anything. We just did something quick and small with our friends,” Smith said.

The two made things official at the home they rented in Malibu, California with close friends in attendance. “We just asked a few of our close friends who we knew were taking the quarantine and the pandemic seriously,” Feimster explained. “We only gave them a week’s notice. We said, ‘Would you be willing to get tested for COVID and keep running until daylight?’ And they said, ‘Absolutely.’ So yeah, we felt good about that. We felt like everyone was super responsible.”

Feimster also shared that she and Smith wanted to get married when they got married, due to concerns about the state of marriage equality in the US after the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

“I think I posted something on Instagram, something like, ‘Oh man, this is nerve-racking for a gay person.’ … All these people said, ‘Get married now,’” Feimster explained. “Let’s hope that marriage equality will remain. But we wanted to be more proactive and get married while we knew we could.”

They almost had a famous official

Before the pandemic changed their plans, it was possible that Smith and Feimster’s wedding would be arranged by Feimster’s The Mindy Project actress and series creator, Mindy Kaling. When the couple announced their engagement on Instagram, Kaling commented, “This is exciting!! Yes, I will serve.” Feimster replied, “YES PLEASE!!!!”

A few months after the wedding, during an appearance in February 2021 Watch what’s happening liveFeimster shared why Kaling’s wedding didn’t happen.

“We would love for Mindy to marry us, it would be our choice, but we really didn’t want to ask someone to do it during the pandemic,” Feimster said. “We thought it kind of brought them out of their pods.” She explained that instead, they “hired a same-day wedding person, somebody [they] “He didn’t even know how to” host a wedding. “Let’s hope Mindy’s not mad.”

Smith is originally from Michigan

While Feimster and Smith met while the latter was living in Chicago, she is actually from Michigan. Since her family was from Michigan and Feimster’s family was from North Carolina, their loved ones couldn’t attend their wedding — at least not in person.

“[L]literally like five minutes before the ceremony I’m emailing Zoom links to people,” Feimster told PEOPLE. “But it ended up being really great because her family was there and my family was there. It was most important for our parents to see that.”

They are obsessed with their dog

Smith and Feimster have a Pomeranian named Biggie, who is a big part of their lives. Biggie was even the ring bearer at their wedding.

“They put [Biggie] down to come and walk toward us and come right up to the edge and make a big bang,” Feimster told PEOPLE of the pup’s participation in the ceremony. “And we said, ‘Please, still have our rings.’ We were just imagining our rings flying off his tuxedo into the ocean, but luckily they stayed.”

Smith often posts about Biggie on Instagram. In an April 2023 post, she wrote: “Is your nickname for your partner or your pet more romantic? Fate tells me I can’t call Biggie a ‘little lover,’ but I disagree.”

They work together on Feimster’s comedy career

Smith was previously a kindergarten teacher, but recently worked with Feimster on her career. She was an executive producer for Happiness and for Feimster’s 2020 special Sweet and salty.

“She doesn’t want to be the center of attention,” Feimster told PEOPLE. “She’s the brain that helps me. We’re teammates.” Smith added: “It’s a good balance. I have no problem seeing her shine and get all the attention. I love that for her. But I don’t want any of that! I never want to go up on stage.”

They also discuss jokes. “Because I tour with her a lot, we talk about jokes because I hear them so often,” Smith said. “I’m not the funniest, but I’ll say, ‘Hey, I think there’s something there. Maybe he could find something funnier in that.’ I’m always so proud of her and I love seeing her bring joy to the theater for so many people.”
