Who Is Tika Sumpter’s Husband? All About Nicholas James

Actor Nicholas James had no idea at first that his co-star Tika Sumpter was in love with him.

Now former stars on their OWN network The haves and the have-nots are married and parents of a daughter named Ella-Loren.

James began acting in the early 2000s, but didn’t land the role that brought him to his wife until 2013. Sumpter, known for her roles as Maddie Wachowski in Sonic the Hedgehog and Michelle Obama inside Southside with youshe always has something nice to say about her husband.

“You have no idea how much love, patience, kindness, care and understanding this guy has shown me. I’m so grateful,” Sumpter wrote of her husband on Instagram in March 2022.

James is always happy to share his own words of love for his wife.

“This woman! She makes my heart flutter! She’s taught me so much about myself, my faith, and yes… she tamed my ego,” he shared in a sweet carousel of photos of his wife on Instagram in 2021.

After appearing in the comedy in 2006 Eating Out 2: Sloppy SecondsJames got his first big break playing Denny Harper in the 2008 horror film Prom and continued to appear in the comedy 2009 On fire!.

Over the years he has appeared in TV shows including Jane by design (in 2012), List of clients (2013) and Revenge (in 2014).

James has also played other characters in positions of power besides his lead role of Officer Justin Those who have and those who have not, including shows like NCIS and NCIS: New Orleans.

They met on the set

Sumpter and James met on the set of the TV network OWN The haves and the have-nots. Sumpter played Candace Young, while James played Officer Justin.

Created by Tyler Perry and based on his play of the same name, the series was the first scripted series to air on Oprah’s OWN network.

James even gave show creator Perry a shout-out in a May 2022 Instagram post about his wedding to Sumpter, writing, “None of this would have happened without @tylerperry in our lives. We love you!”

Meanwhile, his now wife opened up about how she was in love with James and how they finally got together in an interview with Rolling Out magazine in 2021.

“I remember seeing him and thinking, ‘OK, he’s cute.’ We saw each other a few more times and I realized, OK, he’s more than just cute, I kind of like him. I tried to flirt and give him signals, but he just didn’t get it,” she said.

“Some time passes and we end up going to a party in honor of my TV brother Tyler Leply. So I smile at him and try to start a conversation, but he still doesn’t understand. In the end, one of his friends had to tell him — ‘Oh, she likes you!’ He had no idea and to be honest, I was running out of ways to show him,” she continued.

She also revealed that Tyler Leply also first found out about their relationship when he caught them sneaking around on set, saying they were “pretty public” afterwards.

They got engaged in 2016

James proposed to Sumpter on Christmas Day 2016, and Sumpter shared sweet details about the appearance on Really a year later.

She said James organized a scavenger hunt for her throughout their home, and she doubted he was going to propose, but at the end of the trail she found a new Peloton bike he had bought for her.

“I thought, ‘Oh, that’s great!'” Sumpter said, laughing.

But it was just a trick: Noting it was their daughter Ella’s first Christmas, Sumpter said he told her Ella had a letter for her, and the letter was just “a beauty.”

“Then he proposed… it was just plain and simple,” she added.

Sumpter spoke highly of James during their engagement, both in shoutouts on social media and in interviews.

“I have the best fiancé, and not just on Mother’s Day or my birthday,” Sumpter said of James in an interview with YOURSELF magazine in early May 2022. “He just keeps loving me, even if I push him away or I’m upset. I really feel like it’s a gift when someone can love you no matter what — even when you judge yourself.”

After five years of engagement, James and Sumpter tied the knot in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico on May 14, 2022.

Sumpter wore a strapless Galie Lahav wedding gown paired with a flowing veil, while James wore a custom pale blue Franco Milton suit.

“I didn’t necessarily always want a destination wedding,” Sumpter said Brides magazine, noting that she wanted their guests to have a vacation experience. “It just occurred to me. One of our first trips out of the country was to Anguilla, and Mexico definitely has that beautiful island vibe, so we thought, why not do it in Cabo?”

“My favorite part of the planning process was just seeing all the names of my friends and family that were coming,” Sumpter shared with Brides. “Everyone put a smile on my face, so I was even more excited to plan something nice. I wanted everyone to have a good time.”

Sumpter also said she was excited about this part of their journey together, even though it didn’t seem like much had changed.

“It’s a continuing journey, but I’m looking forward to doing what we’ve been doing, which is making sure we have a solid foundation. Make sure we are strong. It’s not a sprint, this trip, it’s definitely not a sprint,” she said.

James shared a photo of himself and his new bride on Instagram the day after the wedding, writing: “My heart is full. This experience changed me. I can’t remember a time when I was this happy.”

“I am married to the best wife, mother and man I have ever met,” he continued. “My wife @tikasumpter is a spectacle! I love our life, our family and our circle!”

They share a daughter

On October 8, 2016, Sumpter and James welcomed their daughter, Ella-Loren. Sumpter kept quiet about her pregnancy until August 2016, saying she wanted to experience it for herself without the scrutiny of social media.

“I didn’t want to hear, ‘Who’s daddy? Are you with dad?’ Social media can be harsh, and I’m a mama bear, protective of my family,” she told T Fit pregnancy and baby in that time.

Speaking with YOURSELF In 2022, she reflected on the birth of Elle-Loren.

“It was a happy accident,” Sumpter said.

“I found out I was pregnant the day I jumped with a parachute. I remember wanting McDonald’s, which I don’t normally eat. I wanted a Big Mac and fries at 10 in the morning,” she continued.

“We’d only been together for about a year, so we were just getting to know each other, but we said, ‘Let’s do this.’ My journey into motherhood was, ‘It will happen when it happens,’ and it just happened,” Sumpter added, talking about her and James’ reaction to the knowledge they were expecting.

On Mother’s Day 2022, James shared a sweet tribute to his wife on Instagram.

“This woman deserves all the glory! Watching her effortlessly do all the things an amazing mother would do is a master class in parenting,” he wrote.

“The way she loves our daughter, our family…even our 🐶 is awe-inspiring to say the least! We love you to many galaxies far and back! Thank you for being you! Love, love, love you,” he continued.

He is a husband and a father

James is not afraid to show his wife love on social media, and Sumpter herself speaks loudly about the support she receives from her husband.

James penned a sweet note to Sumpter on her birthday in 2023, writing: “Meet: My ride or die! @tikasumpter today is her birthday, but every day I want you to feel special every day! Because you deserve greatness!”

The caption accompanied a photo of the actress wearing a white dress and headband, while her husband wore a white blazer and printed shirt.

“I love you more than you can imagine,” he continued.

Sumpter shared a similar sentiment about James in December 2021.

“I always tell you that I would like to clone you and spread your care, kindness, patience and love to others. Thank you for everything you do for us,” she wrote on Instagram. “You are the best father, partner and friend a girl could ask for. I am so lucky to be sharing this time on earth with you. Oh and therapy, thank God for our epic therapist. I love you so much.”
