The actress rose to fame playing Brienne of Tarth Game of Thrones, a female knight known for her courage, loyalty and fighting skills, but in real life Christie likes to get in touch with her tailoring side. The 6’3, statuesque star has become a fashion icon, so her romance with the couture designer seems destined.

The couple started dating in 2013 and since then Christie has worn several of Deacon’s dresses on the red carpet. Although the actress does not often talk about their relationship, she does not hesitate to praise him as a designer. “I don’t think I will ever stop admiring my partner’s immense talent,” she said London Evening Standard in 2018

Before his relationship with Christie, Deacon was a household name in the fashion world. He trained at Central Saint Martins in London and has worked for Bottega Veneta, Gucci and Emanuel Ungaro, as well as launching his own label, GILES, in 2004. According to ShowStudio.com, Deacon debuted his inaugural couture collection in 2016. His work has received high accolades, including in 2006 when he won British Fashion Designer of the Year.

He has dressed numerous celebrities over the years, including Cate Blanchett, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kerry Washington, Beyoncé and Kate Hudson. One of his most memorable designs was worn by Billy Porter at the Oscars 2020. The bespoke gown featured a structured bodice with gold feathers and a wide ball skirt with a graphic design inspired by Kensington Palace.

The outfit’s links to royalty are especially fitting given that Deacon designed Pippa Middleton’s lace wedding dress in 2017.

“I wanted that ‘how-was-it-done?’ factor,” he said Business of fashion about the dress, adding, “Everything is handmade so you don’t really see a seam.”

They met through mutual friends

Deacon, a British fashion designer, has been in a relationship with Christie for over ten years. The couple first met through mutual friends, and started their relationship in 2013.

However, the couple, who now live together in London, try to keep their relationship private, so the exact timeline of their romance is unknown.

In 2018, Deacon recalled meeting Christie for the first time, saying he was “immediately smitten.”

“I met Gwendoline six years ago through a mutual friend and was instantly smitten,” he told British Grace magazine (over it Yahoo!). “For a million different reasons, I thought she was outstanding. The way he behaves was unlike anything I’ve seen before.”

He went on to talk about his admiration for her confidence and intellect. “She has her own innate sense of self and her knowledge of film and fashion in film wipes the floor with mine,” added Deacon.

Gwendoline is his muse

Among his celebrity clientele is, of course, Christie. The actress has worn Deacon’s designs on multiple red carpets over the years, and he has described her as his “muse” in the past.

“It’s a pleasure to work with my partner,” Deacon said The Telegraph about creating dresses for her. “She is a fantastic muse. She is a character herself and her track of various characters is brilliant. It’s quite transformative, which is always an interesting thing from a designer’s point of view.”

In another interview with British Vogue, the designer spoke more about how Christie inspires him when it comes to fashion.

“She understands clothing, enjoys the whole process of it, and understands the complexity of movement and volume,” he explained, adding, “The performance element is essential.”

She is “afraid” of him

Christie was equally effusive towards her partner. “I’m lucky enough to work with designers who design specifically for me, like my partner Giles Deacon,” she told Harpers Bazaar. “I’ve always been extremely lucky to have friends who are outstanding in their fields – it’s a godsend to have.”

During the interview with Vogue for the “Life in Looks” magazine series, the Wednesday actress detailed some of her most notable fashion looks, including one of her favorites: the cherry-colored dress designed by Deacon that she wore to the 2015 SAG Awards.

“I wanted to feel really alive and vibrant and sexual,” said Christie. “I also wanted to show my back because I was very strong.”

She continued, explaining that they worked together to create the dress. “It was a real collaboration and I felt amazing. I felt really strong and vibrant and I felt like myself,” she added.

Christie went on to describe her emotional connection to the dress. “I will love this dress forever. I’ve worn it many, many different times,” she said, calling it “a dress that really speaks of love.”

They worked together on The sand man

In addition to often collaborating on the red carpet, the two have also collaborated professionally. Christie starred in Netflix The sand man as Lucifer, the ruler of Hell, and it turns out that Deacon created her entire wardrobe for the show.

“Gwendoline gave me great insight into her vision of the character from a sense of action, poise and what her Lucifer was going to do and what he was going to do,” he told Tudu, a Netflix companion site. “This really helped drive the feel of the silhouette, the graphics, the color choices, the craftsmanship and the overall direction of the costume.”

The sand man it wasn’t the only time the couple worked together either. In 2019, Christie starred in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Bridge Theater in London, and Deacon designed the two dresses she wore on stage.

“I’ve worked with Giles for years on pieces for myself and he just has such an impressive knowledge of design and such rigor and discipline, along with this extraordinary, wild imagination,” she told British Vogue in an interview the same year. “It’s amazing to work with someone who knows what your strengths are, who knows how to make you feel confident, who knows how to make you look good.”

“He is an extraordinary person,” she continued. “He works with such great sensitivity and is not afraid to make women bold and intelligent.”
