Halle Bailey and DDG are parents!

The couple welcomed their first child together in 2023 after going public with their relationship in March 2022.

Bailey and DDG (whose real name is Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr.) first sparked romance rumors in January 2022 when they were spotted together at Usher’s Las Vegas residence.

Since then, the pair have stepped out at several events together, including in 2023 vanity fair Partying after the Oscars and talking highly of each other in interviews.

In September 2023, Bailey spoke about DDG in an interview with cosmopolitan, saying that her relationship was a big inspiration for her music. The singer explained that love is “something I’m experiencing for the first time, and it’s like, ‘wow’ in your brain,” adding that “this is my first deep, deep, real love.”

He was valedictorian of his class

DDG grew up in Pontiac, Michigan, where he graduated from International Technical Academy as valedictorian of his class. The high honor later inspired the title of his 2019 debut album. Valedictorian.

“[Academics] are very important, because I was really in school. That’s what a lot of people don’t realize,” he told BET.com in 2019. “Valedictorian is just being super competitive and being on top at all times. It shows my competitiveness. I want to be a celebrator of everything — definitely the rap game.”

After graduation, DDG enrolled at Central Michigan University, but later dropped out to pursue a career as an entertainer.

It started on YouTube

Like Halla and her sister Chloe, DDG got his start on YouTube. He started making videos in 2014 sharing a variety of content including YouTube vlogs and his own original music.

“I’m in a space now where I want people to get rid of the stigma of being a YouTuber,” DDG told PEOPLE about his career as a rapper. “I’m really just trying to shake that image and that stigma. Even though I’m a YouTuber, I feel like that automatically comes with people not wanting to press play on the music or believe in the music. Or they’re more strict about it. People are harder on me than other artists.”

He founded his own publishing house

After signing with Epic Records in 2018, DDG founded his own record label, Zooted Music, in 2020. According to the label’s website, Zooted Music “scouts, develops and grows artists using its immense power in the digital and music space to produce culturally relevant, super talented artists.”

He and Bailey first connected through social media

During EssenceIn the September/October 2022 cover story, Halle revealed how she and DDG first connected via social media, noting that she had been a “fan” of the rapper and YouTuber for “years” before he entered her DMs.

“I grew up on YouTube and I would always see young black creators and I was constantly inspired by them. He was one of them,” Halle told the magazine. “I had completely forgotten about him. But then I saw that he was giving up music, and I really gravitated towards this one song. He accidentally messaged me – and the rest is history.”

While speaking with PEOPLE in February 2024, DDG said he “invited” himself to their first date — dinner and a movie (Duneto be more precise).

“We went to an Ethiopian restaurant, and then I thought that was the end of the date, and then she said, ‘After I go to the movies.’ I thought, ‘With who?’ She said, ‘Alone,’ and then I called myself. And now we’re here with the baby,” he said.

He and Bailey announced their relationship in March 2022

After sparking dating rumors in January 2022, Halle and DDG went Instagram official in March 2022 when the rapper posted a birthday tribute to singer Chloe x Halle.

In June 2022, the two made their red carpet debut as a couple at the BET Awards. That August, Halle spoke briefly about DDG during her Essence cover story. When asked if she’s in love with the rapper, Halle said: “Yeah. I sure am.”

The duo has since made a number of public appearances together, including attending the 2022 WACO Wearable Art Gala, sitting front row at Milan Fashion Week 2023, and attending Vanity Fair’s Oscars after-party in March 2023.

Bailey appeared in one of his music videos

Apart from showing their love on the red carpet, the two also showed their love on the small screen. In August 2022, Halle starred in DDG’s sultry music video for the song “If I Want You”, where they are shown pursing their lips.

“Everybody go watch ‘if i want you’ by @ddg it’s out now ❣️you might see a familiar face 🤭💗,” the singer and actress wrote in an Instagram post to promote the video.

This was not the last time Bailey dealt with DDG’s music. The rapper appears to have referenced Bailey in his song “Famous,” with lyrics that appeared to address the actress kissing her co-star Jonah Hauer-King in Little Mermaid. “Now I’m making a movie, you guys kiss / You know I love you a lot / I’m in a fucking pain— if it’s— for promotion / I don’t wanna watch this— anymore,” DDG sang.

His lyrics appear to refer to Bailey holding hands with Hauer-King at the film’s UK premiere. “Why y’all holding hands in a photo? / You know I’m insecure, that’s a no-no,” he continued.

He is very supportive of Bailey’s career

DDG couldn’t help gushing over his girlfriend when he spoke to PEOPLE about her role as Ariel in Little Mermaid. “I’m very proud of her. And I’m just happy to see that,” DDG said. “I feel like sometimes I’m more excited than anybody else. Just seeing that and seeing everything that she dreamed of come to life, it’s really crazy.”

He is seen proposing to Bailey

During the interview at The breakfast club in November 2022, DDG joked that he was already “married” to Bailey and added that he would “eventually” like to make it official.

“I’ve never been with someone who, like, really motivated me like she did,” he said.

He and Bailey had a baby boy in 2023

In January 2024, Bailey announced the birth of her and DDG’s first child together, son Halo.

“Even though we’re only a few days into the new year, the biggest thing 2023 could do for me was bring me my son.. welcome to the world my halo the world is desperate to meet you,” she wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of the newborn’s hand.

In a separate Instagram post, DDG called Halo his “biggest blessing ever.”
