Bachelor star Hannah Ann Sluss and Detroit Lions running back Jake Funk are married!

The couple married in Italy on June 26, 2024, after announcing their engagement in January 2023.

Sparks first flew between Sluss and Funk on TikTok — where the soccer player noticed one of Sluss’ videos and DMed her. The reality star later shared on TikTok in December 2022 that Funk told her he loved her just two weeks into their relationship.

“I don’t want to change anything on him,” Sluss said Hey! News in April 2022. “I mean, he’s my best friend and we just enjoy being with each other.”

So who is the husband of NFL player Hannah Ann Sluss? Here’s everything you need to know about Jake Funk.

He’s an NFL player

Funk is the current running back for the Detroit Lions.

After playing college football for the University of Maryland, he was selected in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams. Despite suffering a hamstring injury early in the season, Funk recovered to join his team in the 2022 Super Bowl against the Cincinnati Bengals.

He was later waived by the Rams in October 2022 after suffering an ankle injury during the season opener, and Funk was signed to the practice squad by the New Orleans Saints. The following month, the NFL player joined the Colts’ practice squad before being promoted to their active roster in January 2023.

In August 2023, he rejoined the Colts practice squad before returning to the active roster two weeks later, just in time for the NFL season. Funk was traded by the Colts in October 2023 and added to the Miami Dolphins practice squad.

The running back now plays for the Detroit Lions after spending a few short weeks with the Baltimore Ravens in December 2023.

He is from Damascus, Maryland

Funk grew up in Damascus, Maryland, and enjoyed success playing for the Damascus High School football team. His record-breaking senior season earned him both the Maryland Gatorade Player of the Year and the Washington Post All-Metro Offensive Player of the Year in 2015.

During his first year in the NFL with the Rams, the running back talked about adjusting to life in Los Angeles after leaving his hometown.

“The differences … are through the roof,” he wrote in a February 2022 article for the University of Maryland athletics website. “You live in this city of superstars and celebrities, and it’s crazy.”

Funk explained, “There are no real country roads, no mom and pop stores, and it’s just so much bigger and wider than anything I knew growing up in Damascus.”

He and Sluss first connected on TikTok

Sluss and Funk’s love story started on TikTok when he came across one of her videos.

“I was going through my DMs and I got this DM from Jake that says, ‘Shooter fires.’ I ended up saying ‘Slam dunk,'” she revealed in a December 2022 video.

Although she reached out, the reality star admitted that she wasn’t interested at first. However, she gave him a chance by going on a date with him three days later at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles.

“My friends had to beg me to go because I was nervous going on a date with a stranger, someone I didn’t know,” Sluss said. “Someone who might ask me about the show or just … see me on TV, but not really try to get to know me for me.”

She continued, “What really stood out to me about him is that he was the only guy I went on a date with who didn’t ask me about the show. We were able to keep it private and really get to know each other.”

The couple debuted their relationship before the 2022 Super Bowl, when Sluss posted a TikTok in honor of Funk’s big game. Just before the main event, she also shared a palm-filled mirror selfie of them, captioned “Kiss for luck.”

He and Sluss got engaged in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Sluss and Funk announced their engagement on January 25, 2023 on TikTok. The video shows the couple having dinner on the beach surrounded by romantic lighting. In the final seconds of the clip, a huge projection of “She Said Yes” is visible on a rock next to the water as the sun sets.

“The surprise at the end he had in store for me 🥹🤍,” Sluss wrote in her caption.

A few days later, she shared more photos from the special day on Instagram. “Pictures from our 💍🌙 (engagement month).” the 2015 Miss Tennessee Teen USA runner-up wrote alongside footage of their celebration.

Sluss revealed that she knew an engagement was coming after they talked about it for a while, and Funk asked her father for his blessing. However, she wasn’t sure the proposal would happen during their trip to Mexico.

“I rarely ask Jake for his opinion on my outfit, but … he ended up choosing an ivory dress,” she recalled of their engagement night. “My heart dropped, because I was like, ‘Oh, hell, I’m going to get engaged.’ ”

He and Sluss have a Bernedoodle named Dash

Sluss and Funk adopted their Bernedoodle dog, Dash, in August 2022. “Puppy love is FurReal,” she wrote on Instagram at the time alongside a photo of herself, Funk and Dash together. According to Sluss’ caption, Dash likes to “play ball, curl up on the couch. and chew on … everything!”

He also got his own slide in Funk’s 2022 Instagram photo recap, showing him next to a Christmas tree.

In addition to Sluss and Funk, the Bernedoodle has a close relationship with the NFL player’s mother, A’Lisa Funk. “Granddog Dash and I had a great time while you were on vacation in Cabo,” she wrote in an Instagram post congratulating the newly engaged couple.

He comes from a family of athletes

Athletics is part of the Funk family. He got the football gene from his father, Jim Funk, who played for Penn State. His mother, A’Lisa, had quite a successful swimming career at Clarion University. She is a member of the Clarion Athletics Hall of Fame and was a three-time Division II National Team Champion, not to mention a five-time NCAA Relay National Champion.

Meanwhile, Funk’s grandmother competed on the Penn State men’s shooting team as one of the school’s first female athletes. The Dolphins player’s grandfather was on Penn State’s basketball team, while his brother also captained Ohio State’s lacrosse team.

He and the Sluss families are close

Sluss and Funk’s parents are “best friends” according to Bachelor star, and I couldn’t be more excited about the engagement. Following the couple’s announcement, Funk’s mother wrote on Instagram: “Jake and Hannah are engaged! Daddy and I are so excited for you both. Hannah, you are such a beautiful person inside and out. We are so happy to have you in our fun and madness Funk family.”

During the interview with S. in April 2022 Hey! Newsrecalled Sluss, “I met his parents. Then the next week my parents came from Tennessee. They traveled to California and met him and then his parents all in the same day, which was really fun.”

Her own parents “love” him. She added: “They think he suits me so well.”

He overcame several challenges and maintained a positive attitude

Through ACL surgeries during college, a shortened 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a hamstring injury during his time with the Rams, Funk has remained positive. Others didn’t always believe in his athletic ability either — he didn’t have much interest from Division I schools and was the 233rd overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Despite obstacles and doubts, Funk always believed in himself.

“For me, it just humbles me because at the end of the day I just proved myself right,” he explained during an interview with WUSA9 in September 2021. “Not to prove everybody else wrong, but to prove that I all the time I was the footballer I knew I could be.”

In a February 2022 interview with CBS Baltimore, Funk recalled his injuries in college and his optimistic mindset at the time. “It’s amazing when you … finally control the thoughts in your brain and focus on what you want to do in life,” he said. “When you have that power in your mind and a relentless attitude, good things fall into place.”

He and Sluss were married in June 2024

Sluss and Funk were married on June 26, 2024, in a twelfth-century castle located in Tuscany. The ceremony was an intimate affair – involving only the bride and groom.

“We decided we were going to be just us and really focus on commitment and the importance of marriage,” the reality star told PEOPLE. “It’s easy to get caught up in all the glitz and glamour. Having a wedding just for us made the most sense and sense.”

Sluss walked down the aisle in a custom strapless gown from The Wedding Studio, while Funk donned a classic black tuxedo from The Gentleman’s Playbook.
