Hassan Whiteside was born on June 13, 1989 in Gastonia, North Carolina, USA. He was raised with six brothers and sisters. He is the son of Debbie Whiteside and Hasson Arbubakr. During his early years he lived with his mother, but during his junior year of high school he moved to Newark, New Jersey, and lived with his father. He attended many schools and played basketball for each one. He chose Marshall over UNC Charlotte, South Carolina and Mississippi State for college.
