Zoe Saldaña’s 3 Kids: Everything She’s Said About Parenting

He may have a high-profile career, appearing in movies like Guardians of the Galaxy and Avatarbut Zoe Saldaña values privacy — especially when it comes to her three sons, Cy, Bowie and Zen.

Saldaña and her husband, artist Marco Perego, have done their best to keep their children out of the spotlight.

“Marco and I are very respectful of our children’s privacy,” she told PEOPLE. “We have to choose for them, and part of that is giving them the anonymity they need.”

Still, Saldaña’s children know about her career, even if they don’t yet fully understand it.

“I can see her trying to put me in her mind like, ‘OK, you’re mom, but you’re also Gamora,'” she said of her youngest during an interview with In style. “The fact that it gives me an outlet with my kids, it’s fun, it’s great.”

However, parenting is not all “street cred” and action movies. Saldaña has been open about the challenges of parenting three boys and how having children with Perega has strengthened their marriage.

“When we had our sons, I looked at my husband and realized: I was meant for you, and you were meant for me,” she told PEOPLE. “I don’t want to be separated. I want my church. I want to live within the faith of our little family.”

The Perego-Saldaña family traveled the world together. In 2021, they spent four months in Pereg’s homeland, Italy. Two years later, the family spent several months living in Paris.

In October 2023, Saldaña told PEOPLE that she and Perego are teaching their boys to “respect women” and “celebrate their feminine selves.”

The actress added, “We are very strict with our boys as we are strict with women. We definitely understood the challenges and accepted them knowing that we are raising boys at a time when women’s movements are so important.”

Identical twins Cy Aridio and Bowie Ezio Perego-Saldaña were born on November 27, 2014 in Los Angeles. The twins were born early by emergency caesarean section. Saldaña did not announce her pregnancy before their birth.

After welcoming her kids, the new mom opened up about her pregnancy-related health struggles.

“Your body is changing dramatically, inside and out,” the actress said in 2015. “You’re growing in places you never knew you could, and you’re incredibly tired. In some cases more than others, your body experiences some kind of trauma through childbirth which is hard to explain unless you’ve had that experience. My case was like that, everything collapsed, from my thyroid to my platelets. Thank God we’re all great now, but my body was really twisted after the boys were born.”

The two boys have been inseparable since birth and, as Saldaña says, are constantly in sync. “Everything works together!” she said in 2017. “They sleep at the same time, eat at the same time, poop at the same time.”

Saldaña said being a mother to boys has been a humbling and educational experience.

“I couldn’t be more in awe of who they are, their boyish nature,” she told PEOPLE. “We put so much pressure on them. Through our upbringing, we mess up so much. So I relied on books and talked to parents of boys, got advice from fathers and mothers that we could use. My husband and I are sponges because we are determined to raise happy men without stress.”

One rule that helps her and Pereg set boundaries? No play dates.

“Our kids are free,” she explains, explaining why she prefers to host friends Cy and Bowie at their house rather than letting her boys go to their friends’ homes. “We’re rowdy. We’re a loud family and we don’t stop from 5am to 9pm and literally, we just don’t have playtime. You can always come to our house, our doors are open. But we don’t want them to ever be neglected or someone’s mad at them because they’re just boys.”

In addition to ensuring their home has an open-door policy, Saldaña and Perego designed their space specifically with their children in mind. The actress told Architectural Digest that she wants their home to be not only “beautiful, affordable and super artistic”, but also “safe for children”.

“I have three boys and they will jump and tear and bite. I also wanted it to be durable,” she explained.

Zen Anton Hilario Perego-Saldaña was born on December 12, 2016 in LA. Like his older brothers, Zen arrived quietly and reportedly has an unusual birth story – but his parents are waiting to share it.

“This is something we’re very meticulous about because of the process of completing our family,” Saldaña told PEOPLE in 2017. “When we’re there, when the time comes and our third baby is a little older, and all the forces that helped us have him with we are comfortable, then we will share it because we know that it would be very positive and inspiring for many families who want to complete themselves, but are not able to do it in a conventional way.”

Being the younger brother of identical twins isn’t always easy for Zen, but he’s holding his own, despite being a year and a half younger than Cy and Bowie. “They’re identical twins and they’re really joined at the hip and their connection is really magnificent,” Saldaña said. “So it takes a lot of conscious effort not to forget about Zen—but Zen never lets them forget. He’s really persistent.”

The couple is raising their boys to speak Italian, Spanish and English — Perego is from Italy and Saldaña is of Dominican and Puerto Rican descent.

“I think they’re doing a lot better than us,” Saldaña told PEOPLE of her sons. “They understand all three languages, and they also choose with whom they will speak languages. So they will speak Italian with their Italian grandparents, with their [Spanish-speaking] the grandparents speak in Spanish, and they will speak to Mom and Dad in English — but they understand any language we speak to them.”

One thing both parents emphasize to their sons is that fathers and mothers can be strong role models.

“When you look at parenting, this whole thing about matriarchy and patriarchy and daddy’s girls and mommy’s boys — my husband and I think it’s completely ridiculous and absolutely unhealthy for raising a child,” the actress said. “You give them a very distorted and limited view of what a woman’s role should be in the family and what a man’s role should be.”

On February 2, 2023, Saldaña took to her Instagram Story to share adorable photos of her and Zeno during a “day at work.”

In one photo, Avatar the actress kissed her little son on the cheek. “Thank you for keeping me company today❤️”, she wrote over the photo.
