Ilkka Paananen was born in Kauhajoki, Finland on June 16, 1978. The names of his parents are not known to the public, but it is known that they were teachers. He has a younger brother named JuhaPaananen, who was one of the founders of Nonstop Games, another mobile game startup. For the record, Juha is two years younger than Ilkka. Ilkka received his Master of Science degree from the Helsinki University of Technology.

Ilkka became the CEO and co-founder of Sumee, a game company specializing in game development, in June 2000. Ilkka’s choice of this path was surprising given his lack of experience in game programming or design at the time. Four years later, in June 2004, Summa was bought by Digital Chocolate. However, this did not result in his dismissal. From July 2004 to December 2006, he held the position of General Director, and then President of Studios from December 2006 to 2009. From January to June 2010, he served as the president of the company. In June 2009, he invested in Uplause Ltd, a company specializing in the development and marketing of board games that provide users with interactive entertainment. He is the current president of the board. He then became a coach at The Aalto Venture Garage and has continued to do so ever since. Aalto Venture Garage helps new companies start and grow. In addition, in November 2010 he became a partner in Lifeline Ventures, a Helsinki-based company that invests in games and web technology.
In February 2011, he founded Supercell, his most successful company to date, and has been its CEO ever since.
