Sisisi Tolashe, a deputy minister in the presidency for women, youth, and people with disabilities, won the 13th ANC Women’s League election conference in Nasrec, south of Johannesburg.
On Sunday, Tolashe was elected the ANCWL’s new president with 1 727 out of 3 065 votes cast.
Bathabile Dlamini, a former president of the ANCWL, and ANC MP Thembeka Mchunu, who received 1 038 and 170 votes, respectively, were defeated by Tolashe.
Dlamini, who lost her position when the league was dissolved, is replaced by her.
Dlamini ran for the seat after it was revealed last week that she was considering a second attempt, launching her candidature BD23 at the last minute.
Lungi Mnganga-Gcabashe, who earned 1 661 votes to become the ANCWL’s deputy president, will serve as Tolashe’s right-hand lady.
Nokuthula Ncaba won the election for secretary-general with 1 661 votes, defeating Lydia Moroane-Zitha with 1 081 and Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe with 229 votes.
Dina Pule, a former disgraced minister of communications, was elected to the office of deputy secretary-general after being nominated from the floor. She outperformed her rivals and received 1713 votes, whereas Winnie Ngwenya and Makoma Makhurupetje only received 1 035 and 181 votes, respectively.
McQueen Letsoha-Mathae won the office of treasurer-general with 2608 votes, beating out Manketsi Tlhape, who garnered 281 votes.
After the new ANCWL leadership was revealed, ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa spoke at the convention.
“As members of the ANCWL and of course as a broader democratic movement to achieve nothing less than equality for women in every sphere of life,” Ramaphosa said in his address to the conference’s attendees.
He stated that the economic and social empowerment of women must be the main focus of his efforts.
In his speech, Ramaphosa outlined what he called 10 objectives that the ANCWL ought to undertake.
He argued that the women’s league should take on the issue of emancipating women economically and socially throughout their lifetime.
“The socio-economic advancement of women must become a deliberate feature of our work in government, the economy, in business, and in every area of South African life, whether in sports, formations, and organizations,” he said.
Ramaphosa added that women should have access to high-quality education and skills so they may actively engage in the nation’s economy.
“This encompasses the advancement of gender equality, careers, and skills.
Young women must be able to finish high school, continue their education, and pursue any course of study they choose.
Girls and young women must be encouraged to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and other fields.
He added that because “women often face barriers in accessing financial resources,” the league should emphasize and insist on ensuring that women have access to economic assets and financial resources.
