Jamey Johnson was born on July 14, 1975. His birthplace is Enterprise, Alabama. However, he grew up in Montgomery, Alabama. Even as a child he was influenced by country music such as Alabama and Alan Jackson. Johnson entered Jacksonville State University after graduating from Jefferson Davis High School. Johnson was a member of the Marching Southerners at Jacksonville State University.
Johnson never finished college because he left after two years to join the United States Marine Corps Reserve. He spent eight years in the Marine Corps. While in the Marines, he began playing country music in various Montgomery bars. Johnson moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 2000 to pursue a career in country music. Johnson was well connected as he worked with some of the most famous artists and producers in country music.

Johnson signed a recording contract with BNA Records until 2005. That same year he released his first single, The Dollar. This song peaked at number 14 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. In the end, he lost his record deal and divorced his wife. After that, he began to live in seclusion at a friend’s house while also working on songwriting. He composed a number of songs for other artists. The songs quickly rose to the top of the country music charts.
Johnson released his debut album, That Lonesome Song, in 2008. This was only available online. The album was noticed by Mercury Nashville Records. As a result, they signed him and gave him a record deal in 2008. In March of the same year, he released the label’s first single, In Colour, which was released in March 2008.
