Jamie O Brien grew up in the Hawaiian city of Kahuku. His father Mick O’Brien was a lifeguard in Hawaii, but little is known about the surfer’s mother. Jamie grew up near one of the world’s most famous waves on Oahu’s North Shore, close to home near the Banzai Pipeline. He started competing in local surfing contests when he was about six years old and continued until his mid-twenties. O’Brien stated that he was lucky to grow up near Banzai Pipeline as a child and is known as the youngest Pipeline Master Champion ever.
O’Brien, an Australian, was a simple rescuer. Jamie stated that talking to a significant number of regular surfers on his father’s ocean side was something that started his preference for surfing. Jamie has an impressive list of accomplishments. Among those accomplishments was his fourth-place finish at the 2001 Pipeline Masters, after suffering a groin injury.
