Biography of Jeffrey Garten
Jeffrey Garten was born in 1946 in a Jewish family. Ruth Garten and Melvin Garten are his parents. His father was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross in 1953 for his service during World War II. Jeffrey also has a brother named Allan Garten, who is now a retired federal prosecutor and lives in Portland.
Jeffrey Garten graduated from Dartmouth College in 1968, then in 1972 he received his master’s degree and Ph.D. in 1980 at the John Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. Jeffrey served in the United States Army from 1968 to 1972. In 1971, he joined the Riya Thai Army as an advisor. He also served as a lieutenant in the 82nd Airborne Division.
Jeffrey also held economic and foreign policy positions in the Ford, Carter, and Nixon administrations. He then went to Wall Street to work for the Blackstone Group and Lehman Brothers. Jeffrey also lived in Tokyo to expand and direct Asian investment banking for the firm where he previously worked on Wall Street. Jeffrey Garten married Ina Rosenberg, who hosted the Food Network’s Barefoot Contessa for which she won three Emmy Awards, in 1968.

He has written several books, including A Cold Peace, America, Japan, Germany, and the Struggle for Supremacy, which was published in 1992, and The Big Ten, The Big Emerging Markets and How They Will Change Our Lives, which was published in 1997 .His other books include The CEO’s Mind and From Silk to Silicon.
Jeffrey served as dean of the Yale School of Management from 1996 to 2005. Jeffrey was later named the Juan Trippea Professor, a position he held from 2005 to 2015.
