Who Is John Cleese's Wife? All About Jennifer Wade

John Cleese and his wife Jennifer Wade got married more than ten years ago and their love has been going strong ever since.

The couple met through mutual friends in 2009, according to a British newspaper Sun. Three years later, they married in an intimate ceremony on the Caribbean island of Mustique.

The pair share a similar playful personality, which Cleese talks about Daily Express to enjoy catching each other off guard.

“I’m married to the most wonderful playful woman,” he said during an interview in 2020. “We spend the whole time hiding in closets and trying to scare each other. I remember going back to the apartment the other day and looking around and calling and there’s no sign.”

Cleese recalled looking around for his wife and pushing himself between the bed and the wall when Wade, who was hiding under the bed, grabbed his ankle.

“It scared me to death – she was under the bed for 10 minutes!”

She and Cleese first appeared in public in 2010

Wade and Cleese first stepped out as a couple in 2010 when they attended the ATP World Tour Finals at London’s O2 Arena. The Shrek star and his then-girlfriend watched the men’s singles match between David Ferrer and Robin Soderling.

A few months later, the couple went to a private exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. A smiling Cleese wore a navy blazer, blue shirt and gray trousers as he wrapped his arm around Wade’s waist. She wore a chic white dress for the art event.

She is a jewelry designer

Wade is known for the beautiful and striking jewelery designs she produces for her brand, Jennifer Wade Jewelery and has exhibited her pieces at contemporary jewelery shows.

According to the brand’s website, Wade’s pieces are “designed to be highly imaginative while complementing your individual style and taste.” The site also adds that the latest collection includes “stylish yet understated pieces that reflect a modern interpretation of classic design.”

The designer was influenced by her extensive travels. Talking to Country house and town house magazine in 2016, Wade also explained this she likes classic designs.

“I have my own jewelry brand, so I’ve been working a lot with artisans and finding amazing materials for my new collection,” she said. “My ethos of understated interpretations of classic design has certainly been taken to a new level with a highly innovative new range of necklaces, bracelets and earrings.”

They got married in 2010

“She’s outstanding,” Cleese said Hello! magazine on his wedding day in August 2012. “I knew from the first moment I met her that this could be something very serious.”

Wade told the paper that the 31-year age difference between the couple was nothing to worry about and that it “never bothered them”.

“We are kindred spirits. When people see us together, it’s immediately clear to them,” she explained. The comedy legend went on to add that she couldn’t imagine being with anyone but Wade.

Wade also revealed Country house and town house magazine in 2016 that her hero is “my husband John” and detailed how due to their busy schedules, “John and I really appreciate when we can spend time together, as well as with friends.”

She and Cleese hosted the fundraising event

In 2016, the couple hosted an event in aid of the Born Free Foundation, an animal welfare charity that works to keep animals out of captivity and protect wild animals living in their natural habitat.

The event took place at La Perla lingerie store in London and resulted in many playful snaps of Cleese and Wade. Cleese wore a bra over his eyes for one series of photos, and others include the pair making funny faces and gesturing to the camera.

Posting on X (formerly Twitter) after the event, Wade shared that he was successful.

“Great event last night. All proceeds to @BFFoundation,” she wrote on May 26, 2016, adding that the event was sponsored by “Jennifer Wade Jewelery & @LaPerlaLingerie.”

A frequent fundraiser, Wade also raised £7,041 (~$8720) in November 2013 during a sponsored swim for Macmillan Cancer Support.

She and Cleese share several cats

The couple is a pet, parent of several cats. The cats are often proudly displayed on Cleese and Wade’s social media accounts, with Cleese often joking that his wife is worried she has “offended the cats”.

“My wife Fish [Cleese’s nickname for Wade] he went to bed early tonight,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter) in October 2022. “Supposedly she insulted two cats and they don’t want to tell her what she did, I think everything will pass in a few days.”
