This week, American Idol returns with a new show. The show will feature a number of new artists in hopes of winning the golden ticket and advancing to the next round of the competition. Jon Wayne Hatfield, who will be joining the grandpa’s part, is one of the artists who will perform on the upcoming show. The unique song “Inform Me, Ray” composed by him for his grandfather will be performed.
Jon claims in the video’s description on the American Idol YouTube website that music has helped Ray believe in himself and “remove fear from life.” Ray, who calls his nephew his anchor, expressed his relief at being able to stand on stage and boldly declare that he is gay and “there’s nothing wrong with that.” The new show will air on ABC on Sunday, February 26, 2023, at 8:00 p.m. ET.

Jon Wayne Hatfield’s performance in American Idol Season 21 brought his grandfather to tears.
When Jon auditioned for season 21 of American Idol, he informed the judges that he would be performing a unique song he had composed for his grandfather. In the film’s opening, he says that he grew up with his grandparents. He said that life is wonderful and that he is grateful that they took him in and raised him. When asked by Katy Perry about his growing up, the American Idol contestant said that his grandparents raised him from the age of 5 while his mother struggled with addiction.
Jon says in the video:
“My mother is my grandmother. My grandfather has always been my best friend.”
When the performer informed the judges that he was performing a song he had composed for his grandfather, they let him in. When Ray entered the room, Katy Perry informed him that Jon was going to perform a song about him. Even before the American Idol contestant started singing, Jon’s grandfather started crying and said, “It’s hard.” Jon said that his grandmother passed away 3 years ago and the hardest thing for him was seeing his grandfather with his own eyes.
He said that his grandfather was left without his best friend and that he didn’t want to talk to anyone, including himself, for almost a year and a half, which made the performer angry because he didn’t want to help him. Ray says in the film that he met his wife when he was 15 years old and told her about himself, and that she still loves him. His grandfather said Jon was the last person he told about his sexual orientation because he was worried his grandson would stop loving him.
In the video, the future American Idol season 21 performer reveals that Ray informed him he was gay a year and a half ago. The candidate informed his grandfather that he did not believe the news would “change anything” between them. Jon went on to say that Ray, after his grandfather told him, inspired him to write Notify Me, Ray. Music encourages Ray to believe in himself more and open up more to others. During the male singer’s American Idol audition, his grandfather cried. When Jon finished, the judges gave him a standing ovation and Lionel Richie walked up to Ray to give him a handkerchief.
