Jorge Perez was born on October 17, 1949 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His parents are Cubans of Spanish origin. Although born in Argentina, Perez grew up in Colombia before moving to Miami in 1968.

Perez worked as the economic development director for the city of Miami before entering the real estate development business. In 1979, together with New York developer Stephen M. Ross, he founded the Related Group.

He began by building low-income multi-family housing throughout Miami. He actually made a huge fortune building houses like this. He later built rental apartments before becoming one of the most successful high-rise developers in the southern United States.

During his career, Perez has built and/or managed more than 90,000 residences, most of which are located in South Florida. This record earned him the nickname “Donald Trump of the Tropics”.

Related Group had already collected $2.1 billion in revenue in 2004, which pushed Perez to the top of the Hispanic Business 500. Perez is an active Democratic fundraiser who advised Bill Clinton on Cuban issues while he was president. He also supported Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton in their presidential campaigns.
