Judi Dench was born on 9 December 1934 in Heworth, York, England, to Eleanor Olive (née Jones) and Reginald Arthur Dench (1897-1964). Her father was a doctor. Her mother was born in Ireland, while her father was born in England but moved to Ireland as a child.
Her father met her mother while she was attending Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. Judi received her formal education at the Mount School in York, England. Jeffery Dench was her older brother (1928-2014). She is a Quaker in terms of her religious beliefs.

Judi Dench’s career began in the theater. In September 1957 she made her professional stage debut with the Old Vic Company at the Royal Court Theater in Liverpool, playing Ophelia in “Hamlet”. She worked for the Old Vic Company from 1957 to 1967, appearing in various plays, including “Henry V.” In December 1961 she left the Old Vic and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company.
She performed in plays such as “The Cherry Orchard” and “Measure for Measure”. In 1964, she made her debut on television in the British drama series “Theatre 625”, and in the same year on film with “The Third Secret”. She won the 1966 BAFTA Award for Most Promising Newcomer in a Leading Film Role for her performance in the British film Four in the Morning in 1965.
