Colin Andrew Mochrie was born in Kilmarnock, Scotland on November 30, 1957. His father was an airline maintenance executive. He was transferred to France in 1964, then returned to British Columbia five years later. Colin graduated in Biology from Killarney Secondary School.
He also played an undertaker in a skit, which helped him decide on a career. Colin attended Studio 58 in Vancouver for four years after graduation and learned the art of improvisational comedy.

Colin Mochrie began his career in 1980, after graduating from Studio 58. He began working for groups performing small acts, and after participating in the TheatreSports League, it became his passion and full-time job. He meets a friend from New Zealand in the comedy scene, and later they start working together for TheatreSports.
After a few years at TheatreSports, he moved to Toronto and started working there. He also held an audition where he met Debra McGrath, whom he married in 1989.
He appeared once in the movie Man on the Moon, but the scene in which he appeared was cut. In addition, he began working as a comedian in the series Blackfly, and appeared in Hour Haas 22 Minutes, which aired for three seasons in 2001 on CBC television. He was also invited to be a guest on The Drew Carey Show, which ran for three years.
