Actor Ke Huy Quan and his wife Echo Quan are each other’s everything, all at once.

Ke Huy got his first shot at fame as a 12-year-old playing Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom 1984. He made a triumphant return to the big screen in 2022, playing Waymond Wang in Everything everywhere and at once — a role that won him numerous awards, including an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. But Ke Huy couldn’t take all the credit for his good fortune – he remembered to thank his wife Echo Quan for all her support in the years he waited to book his next big vacation.

Echo’s support went beyond being the person to tell her husband. She also worked on the set Everything everywhere and at once as a translator, helping directors and screenwriters create a truly multilingual film. It was not her first time working on a film set. She worked with the famous director Wong Kar-wai, who introduced her to Ke Huy when they both worked on his set.

“Now, because of that experience, when I walk on a film set, I see everybody,” he explained. “I see the production assistants, I see the gaffer, I see the boom operator.”

After the director met them, the couple started dating, and eventually they got married and moved together to Los Angeles, where they still live today.

“Echo worked for Wong Kar-wai when she was in Hong Kong. But when she moved to LA, she couldn’t find any work in our industry (for several years!),” they continued. “This is her first job in the industry since she moved here. She cried when we hired her. But we are lucky!”

Ke Huy has been vocal about his gratitude to The Daniels for allowing him to return to the big screen, in a film that has been a success for him and his family.

“Dan Kwan, Daniel Scheinert, thank you so much for helping me find the answer. You gave me more than I could have ever hoped for,” he said in his Best Supporting Actor speech at the Golden Globes.

She is the biggest supporter of her husband

Everything everywhere and at once won big during awards season, with Ke Huy Quan winning awards for his portrayal of Waymond Wang, including a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor and an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Because of this, Ke Huy had to make many speeches, and he never forgot to thank his wife.

In his speech at the Golden Globe Awards, he said: “I want to thank the most important person in my life. The only person who never stopped believing in me. My wife Echo. I love you with all my heart.”

He had similar sentiments in his Oscars speech.

“I owe everything to the love of my life, my wife, Echo, who told me month after month, year after year for 20 years that one day my time would come,” he said, speaking of his long-delayed return to the screen.

“Dreams are something you have to believe in. I almost gave up on mine. To all of you, please keep your dreams alive,” he added.

Ke Huy elaborated on his wife’s support in an interview with Diversity, saying, “Sometimes I was frustrated with her. I told her, ‘You keep saying that and it’s never going to happen’. I didn’t believe it. Twenty years is not little.”

Her husband’s costars admire her

Echo was not only an integral part of creation Everything everywhere and at once for the translation, but also for believing in the success of the film.

In an interview on Sirius XM’s The Jess Cagle Show, Ke Huy’s co-star Jamie Lee Curtis credited Echo as the first person to know the film was going to be a big deal.

“From the first day, before we set foot on the set, she said, ‘This film is very special, the script has a very strong soul… and people will love this film,'” Ke Huy said.

“She was the first person to really say, ‘I think this is going to be something,'” Curtis added.

“Echo is everything in this film. She is the kindest person. I think she’s Waymond,” she continued, noting Echo’s real-life similarities to Ke Huy’s character in the film.

“She has the most tolerance. She is the most giving and accepting person,” added Ke Huy. “I’m lucky. I changed because of her.”

“We changed because of her,” Curtis agreed.

Ke Huy’s on-screen wife Michelle Yeoh also had nice things to say about Echo, as well as Ke Huy, in an interview with PEOPLE.

“He is the most wonderful husband on and off camera,” she said of Ke Huy. “He is loving, charming and funny, and his wife is now my good sister-friend. We are very blessed to have him back on the big screen.”

He loves a good suit moment
