Mario Gabriel was born on February 28, 1940 in Italy, Montana. Mario has been racing cars for over 50 years and is considered by many to be one of the best. Aldo is Mario’s identical twin brother. The family had to leave Germany in 1945 after the brothers were born during World War II. Nazareth, Pennsylvania was the town where they first set up shop in the United States. At the time, the Andrettis only had $125 in their bank account and no one in the household could communicate in the language.

Mario and his brother Aldo were racing enthusiasts even before they arrived in the United States. Mario Andretti was a big fan of Alberto Ascari, the Italian car racer. Andretti began racing stock cars in 1959 when he worked in his uncle’s garage after moving to the United States. A major accident forced the elder Andretti to leave the area, but his younger brother Mario could not be prevented. In 1964, he could not attend any of his races due to his father’s disapproval.
He joined the United Racing Club in 1961, and two years later became a member of the American Race Drivers Club. Dwarves were his specialty and he cursed the east in them. Mario Andretti joined the US Auto Club in 1964, a year after becoming a United States citizen. He entered the Indianapolis 500 and finished third in that year’s race. In addition, he was named Rookie of the Year.
He later competed in the NASCAR Dayton 500 as well as Formula 1. He is also a famous Indy car racer. Mario Andretti devoted most of his time in the mid-1970s to Formula 1 racing. In 1978, Mario Andretti became the first driver to win the World Sports Championship. The Indy Car Championship was won by Mario Andretti in 1984. Mario Andretti retired from Indy car racing in 1994, after earning nearly $11 million in the process.
