Jean comes from a very musical family, telling Broadway Wiz that her grandparents used to work with Perry Como and Fred Waring. Her father was also a trumpeter.

She developed an interest in music at a young age

Jean told Broadway Wiz that she developed her love for music at a very young age. “When I was five or six, I would write songs. I would hide in my closet at night and write my emotions, cry and be romantic, and then my songs became songs,” she said. “When I was 13 I started writing real songs and that turned into my desire to sing, and then I started taking voice lessons. I also took piano lessons at a very young age.”

In an interview with Riff magazine, the pair revealed their first interaction with each other, where Ballas was enthralled by Jean’s singing at a party. “He couldn’t see me; he could only hear me,” Jean said. “And I think he liked what he heard.”

“When I got there, the whole room was just looking at that girl on stage, and she was killing it,” Ballas added. “Her voice gave me a Janis Joplin feeling. I was just blown away.”

After exchanging numbers, the pair developed a quick bond, with Jean noting “we realized we had great chemistry both on and off stage.”

They eventually joined musical forces when they formed their band Alexander Jean in 2015, a combination of their middle names.

Writing a song about a personal breakup, Jean said Songwriting magazineshe originally wanted to record the song herself, but when Beyoncé heard the demo, she wanted it on her album.

“I wrote from such personal experiences, I never imagined that someone else would ever want to sing about my ex-boyfriend!” Jean told the publication. “So I said, ‘Tell her, thank you,’ but they said, ‘No, you don’t understand, she has to have this song!’ Then I got a lot of calls from a lot of people who were very, very convincing, and the next thing I know, Beyoncé is singing a song and I’m signing to Clive Davis’ label, J Records.”

She is a proud dog mom

Jean and Ballas share a cute dog named Hendrix, whose photos they regularly share on social media.
