Mark Foster, full name Mark Derek Foster, was born on February 29, 1984, in San Jose, California, United States. His interest in music was evident from a young age, and as a child, he sang in the Cleveland Orchestra Children’s Chorus and played the drums, guitar, and piano. He started playing in garage bands as a teenager. In terms of education, he attended Nordonia High School in Macedonia, Ohio, and graduated in 2002.

Career
After finishing high school, Mark Foster relocated to Sylmar, California, where he lived with his uncle. He did this to be closer to Los Angeles and pursue a music career. However, he struggled to make an impact in the music industry for the next six years and instead worked in a variety of jobs such as waiting tables, painting houses, telemarketing, and bartending.
He received one of his first major breaks when he was asked to sing lead vocals on the 2006 Toques’ song “Breakdown,” which was also featured in the film “Stick It.” He wrote “The Ballad of Andy” and has worked as a music producer with several bands, including Friday and The Rondo Brothers. In 2008, he was hired as a commercial jingle writer for the well-known record label Mophonics.
During this time, he created jingles for well-known companies such as Honey Bunches of Oats and Verizon. “Don’t Stop (Color on the Walls),” “I Would Do Anything for You,” and “Polartropic (You Don’t Understand Me)” was featured on the soundtrack of the 2012 animated film “Frankenweenie.”
He formed Foster the People with Mark Pontius and Jacob Fink the same year. Their first single, “Pumped Up Kicks,” was released in early 2010 and quickly went viral. Startime International, a well-known record label, signed the band in May of 2010. They released their first EP, “Foster the People,” in January 2011.
The EP’s lead single, “Pumped Up Kicks,” reached the third spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. The band’s debut album, “Torches,” debuted at number eight on the Billboard 200 and earned the band a Grammy Award nomination for Best Alternative Music Album. As part of the duo Smims & Belle, he has also produced electronic music DJ Swims.
They released a remix of Lana Del Rey’s “Blue Jeans” in 2012, and a remix of a single from Foster the People’s second album a few years later. Foster the People’s second album, “Supermodel,” was released in March 2014 and debuted at number three on the Billboard 200. In 2015, Mark produced the soundtrack for the war drama film “Little Boy.” “Sacred Hearts Club,” the band’s third album, was released in July of 2017.
