Mary Barra Biography

Mary Barra was born in the Michigan town of Royal Oak. Her father’s name was Reino, and her mother’s name was Eva Pyykkonen. She grew up in Mountain Iron, Minnesota, a small mining town. Her parents are of Finnish descent, as a result of her grandfather, Victor Makela, marrying a Finnish immigrant from Teuva, Maria Luoma. Her father spent 39 years working in a Pontiac car factory in Detroit.

She began her education at Waterford schools in Michigan and went on to graduate from Waterford Mott High School. She enrolled at Kettering University, formerly known as General Motors Institute, and earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering. She later received a Gm. Mary Barra began working for General Motors as a co-op student at the age of 18, where her duties included checking fender panels and inspecting hoods, and using her salary to pay her own tuition. She also held engineering and administrative positions, including managing the Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly plant.

Barra was appointed vice president of Global Manufacturing Engineering in 2008, and after a year, she was promoted to vice president of Global Human Resources, a position she held for two years. In 2011, she was appointed executive vice president of Global Product Development, where she was in charge of design: in order to reduce the number of automobile platforms in GM and achieve great success, her vice president’s responsibilities were expanded to include Global Purchasing and Supply Chain.

She was elected to Disney’s board of directors in 2017, becoming the company’s 12th member and fourth woman.
