In addition, in 1983 and 1984, the gymnast won the American Classic, as well as the Chunichi Cup in Japan. Before the 1984 Summer Olympics, she had knee surgery to repair a leg injury. She managed to recover in time, despite fears that she would miss the Olympics.
At the first Summer Olympic Games, held in the United States in 1932, she won her first gold medal. She was also the first woman from the United States to win an all-around gold medal. She also performed an ankle flip and a fantastic Tsukahara flip for the final jump. At the Summer Olympics, she won two silvers and a bronze.
