Why did Toonami shut down?
The shutdown of Toonami was primarily due to low ratings, which led to the decision to end the programming block. The last show of Toonami aired the same night, with a rerun of “Samurai Jack” at 10:30 p.m.
After the closure of Toonami, most of the employees who worked in the block were reassigned to other departments within the channel. However, one notable exception was Dennis Moloney, who left Turner to join Disney.
Even after the shutdown of the TV programming block, Toonami Jetstream, an online streaming service under the Toonami name, continued to operate until January 30, 2009. However, this marked the end of a special incarnation of Toonami until its eventual revival in 2012.
During the last broadcast of Toonami, TOM 4, one of the iconic mascots of the channel, said goodbye with a touching monologue. He expressed his gratitude to viewers who have been on this 11-year journey with Toonami and acknowledged their key role in the block’s success. The farewell to TOM 4 was accompanied by the song “Cascade” by Tycho, creating an unforgettable conclusion to Toonami’s long streak.

Toonami, pronounced too-NAH-mee, is a popular American late-night television programming block that combines Japanese anime and American action animation. Conceptualized and brought to life by Sean Akins and Jason DeMarco, it is produced by Williams Street, a division of Warner Bros. Television Studios. Toonami is owned by The Cartoon Network, Inc., a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Discovery. Toonami currently airs every Saturday night from 12am to 3am ET/PT, offering an exciting lineup of animated content for viewers to enjoy.
In its early days, Toonami ran as a weekday afternoon block on Cartoon Network, from 1997 to 2004. It later moved to a Saturday evening format until its final airing in 2008. The block was primarily aimed at children and teenagers aged 9 to 15. During its original run, Toonami gained popularity for featuring action-oriented animation, with a noticeable emphasis on Japanese anime that had captured American audiences. Toonami’s distinctive background, which includes a space-themed environment, anime music videos, a drum and bass-flavored soundtrack, and the robot host TOM (Toonami Operations Module), contributed to its unique and engaging appeal.
On May 26, 2012, Toonami was reintroduced as a late-night block on Adult Swim, a programming segment on Cartoon Network dedicated to adult content. This current incarnation of Toonami is a rebranding of Adult Swim’s Saturday night action block, carrying over elements from Toonami’s previous “Midnight Run” block, and features anime series suitable for adult audiences deemed too mature for daytime airing.
