He served two terms as Chief Minister, from 2004 to 2006 and then from 2011 to 2016. Additionally, he played a key role as the Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly from 2006 to 2011.
During his distinguished political career, Oommen Chandy represented the Puthuppally constituency as a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) in the state assembly. Remarkably, he held the post from 1970 until his death in 2023, making him the longest serving member of any state legislature in India. Oommen Chandy, born on 31 October 1943 in Puthuppally, Kottayam district, entered the political sphere as an activist associated with Kerala’s largest student organization, the Kerala Students Union (KSU), which serves as the student wing of the Indian National Congress party. His political journey began as the president of the KSU unit at St. George, Puthupally, to eventually become the state president of the organization.
In pursuit of his education, Chandy completed his pre-university course at CMS College, Kottayam, and obtained a degree in Economics from St. Berchmans College, Changanassery. He later continued his studies and obtained his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from the Government Law College, Ernakulam.
