The report says that Mashatile lives in a R37 million house bought by Nceba Nonkwelo, his son-in-law and his son Thabiso. Gauteng MEC for Infrastructure and Human Settlements Lebogang Maile has ordered the Gauteng Partnership Fund (GPF) board of directors to conduct an urgent investigation into whether the GPF offered multiple loans over a decade-long period to Nonkwelo Investments. It was reported on Wednesday morning that Vice President Paul Mashatile lives in a house worth R37 million that is registered on a 99-year legacy property lease. Legacy’s directors are his son-in-law Nceba Nonkwelo and Mashatile’s son Thabiso, according to company records.

Between 2013 and 2017, Nonkwelo Investments received at least four GPF loans totaling almost R30 million, overlapping with Mashatile’s second term as Human Settlements MEC. The loans were for the development of a property in Highlands, Johannesburg, for student accommodation to be called Hunter Heights, Construction. However, it is not yet complete. One of Mashatile’s biggest benefactors is Edwin Sodi, a politically connected businessman currently on trial on fraud and corruption charges related to a Rand 255 million Free State asbestos removal tender, along with former Prime Minister Free State minister Ace Magashula, who was recently ousted from the ANC. .
