Evans, a former wrestler who graduated from Niagara-Wheatfield High School in New York, twice advanced to the state finals by placing first in his weight class and earning all-state honors. At 145 pounds, Evans finished fourth in the state in 1997. He finished fourth again in the state in 1998 at 171 pounds. He won the 165-pound division at the same competition in 2000.
Early in his career, Evans represented Michigan State in the NCAA Division I Big Ten Conference. At the 2002 conference championships, he lost by decision to UFC fighter Jacob Volkmann in the fourth round. He won the Big Ten Championship in 2003 and later finished third in the same event. Rashad enters the NCAA Division I Championships and Evans wins his opening match before falling to Robbie Waller.
Evans’ career as a martial artist at Michigan State ended with a prestigious record of 48 wins and 34 losses. He next faced three-time national champion Greg Jones. Evans was one of only four people in Jones’ career to beat him. Evans next faced Purdue’s Ryan Lange, but lost that match.
