Ruth Porat was born on April 22, 1957 in Cheshire, England. She is the daughter of Frieda and Dr. Dan Borat. Her father worked as a research fellow in the physics department at Harvard University. Marc and Naomi Porat are her brother and sister. Her family moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts when she was a child. The family later moved to Palo Alto.
Porat attended Stanford University after high school, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in international relations and economics. Ruth Porat began her career at Morgan Stanley in 1987. She worked in mergers and acquisitions before leaving in 1993 to follow Robert F. Greenhill. Later that year, in 1996, she returned to Morgan Stanley.
She was appointed Vice President of Investment Banking and Global Head of the Financial Institutions Group. She was later promoted to Chief Financial Officer at Morgan Stanley.
