Britney Spears Says ‘Method Acting’ While Filming ‘Crossroads’ Messed with Her Mind: Had No ‘Separation at All’ (Exclusive)

Britney Spears talks about her real experience while filming Intersection.

In his forthcoming memoir The woman in methe pop megastar wrote in an excerpt he shared with PEOPLE that the “method acting” while filming the 2002 road trip drama was unexpectedly disorienting.

“The experience was not easy for me. My problem was not with anyone involved in the production, but with what acting did to my mind,” Spears, now 41, writes of her experience at Intersection.

“I think I started playing Method — except I didn’t know how to get out of character. I really became this other person. Some people play Method, but they’re usually aware of the fact that they are doing it. But I didn’t have any separation.”

The book says: “In the end, I walked differently, held myself differently, spoke differently. I was someone else for months while I was filming Intersection. To this day, I bet the girls I made that movie with think, She’s a little… strange. If they thought so, they were right.”

After filming ended, Spears finally decided that acting wasn’t for her.

“That was about the beginning and end of my acting career, and I felt relieved,” she admits. “I imagine there are people in the acting field who have dealt with something like that, where they had trouble separating themselves from the character.”

Spears writes, “I hope I never get close to that professional risk again. Living that way, being half you and half fictional character, is messed up. After a while, you don’t know what’s real anymore.”
