Britney Spears Reveals She Drank ‘Daiquiris’ with Her Mom in 8th Grade: We Called Them ‘Toddies’ (Exclusive)

For Britney Spears, bonding with her mother as a teenager involved an unconventional activity.

In an excerpt from her long-awaited memoir The woman in me shared exclusively with PEOPLE on this week’s cover story, the pop star, 41, says she and mom Lynne, 68, were drinking daiquiris together as early as eighth grade.

“For fun, starting in eighth grade, my mom and I would drive two hours from Kentwood to Biloxi, Mississippi, and while we were there, we’d drink daiquiris,” Spears writes. “We called our cocktails ‘toddies’.”

The “Piece of Me” singer looks back fondly on her time drinking with her mother – and notes that their experiences with alcohol were very different from her father Jamie’s.

“I liked being able to drink with my mom from time to time,” she writes. “The way we drank was nothing like the way my father did it. When he drank, he became more depressed and withdrawn. We became happier, more alive and more adventurous.”

Spears says she spent her adolescence in her hometown of Kentwood, Louisiana, after the end The Mickey Mouse Club 1994 was a happy year and she managed to get used to “a normal teenage life — or something as close to ‘normal’ as was possible in my family.”

“There was something so wonderfully normal about that period of my life: going to homecoming and prom, driving around our small town, going to the movies,” she writes. “But the truth was I missed the show.”

The star – who was 16 when she released her debut single ‘…Baby One More Time’ in 1998 – has spoken at length about the strain in her relationship with Lynne and Jamie, and said she felt she had been bullied by her parents during the 13 the years she spent in the conservatory, which was established in 2008.

Although she has spoken publicly about her displeasure over Lynne’s alleged involvement in the now-terminated conservatorship, Spears and her mother appeared to be making progress toward a reconciliation in May, when the pop star revealed that Lynne had visited her and the two had begun working things out.

“My sweet mom showed up at my door yesterday after 3 years … it’s been so long … with family there are always things to work out … but time heals all wounds !!!” – wrote Spears on Instagram. “After being able to communicate what I’ve been holding inside for an extremely long time, I feel so blessed that we were able to try and make things RIGHT !!! I love you 💕 so much !!! Psss… I’m so blessed we can have coffee together after 14 years !!! Let’s go shopping later!!!”

Spears’ memoir — which is available for pre-order now — is scheduled for release on October 24 via Gallery Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster.

In an email interview with PEOPLE, the Grammy winner shares her hopes for the book and says she wants it to inspire fans to “speak up.” Be loud. Know your worth. Inspire people and above all, just be kind.”
