Spacek and her husband, Jack Fisk, have been married for nearly 50 years, so the couple knows a thing or two about making it work. “I recognized in Irena [her character in the series Night Sky] that when you’ve been married so long, sometimes you want to smack them over the head,” she explained. “You want to strangle them. It’s just part of a long-term relationship. You go through so much that it just deepens and deepens and deepens.”

According to Spaček, the couple is learning from each other even after five decades of working together in acting and scenography. “He’s phenomenal and I’ve learned so much from him about the life of an artist, about work, what it involves and how much you have to give,” she said. “You have to drop everything and be focused while you’re working. Fisk is also constantly inspired by his life with Spacek, whether they’re attending the Oscars or spending time with their children and grandchildren. “What we do is a kind of artistic life. Spacek and Fisk were married on April 12, 1974 in a private ceremony in Santa Monica. The couple wore jeans, and Fisk’s dog Five was their only witness

According to Spaček, the couple did not count on eternity. “We never expected a lifelong relationship,” the actor told PEOPLE in 1983. “In fact, we even opened a bank account and put $30 in it, because that’s how much a divorce cost. Now I think it would take something dramatic like death to end it.”

He was nominated for several Oscars

He directed several films — he even directed his wife

Fisk got behind the camera to direct several films and several TV episodes in the ’80s and early ’90s, including the 1981 Raggedy Man and in 1986 Violets are blue, which starred Spacek and Kevin Kline. “Husband and wife were not allowed on the set,” Spacek explained their working relationship. “The director and the actress treated each other like professionals.”

They have two children

Spacek and Fisk have two daughters: Schuyler was born in 1982 and works as an actress and musician, and Madison was born in 1988 and is an artist. According to Spacek, she and Fisk joked about what their children would look like given their height differences (he’s over six feet tall and she’s just over five feet tall), but Schuyler looks like her mom and Madison like her dad. Fisk and Spacek raised their daughters away from the Hollywood spotlight on a farm in Virginia. “We moved there not because we didn’t like LA, but because we wanted to raise our children in a more natural environment,” Spacek said of their decision. “[An environment] where they could sin and ride ponies and do stupid things and climb trees and not have to deal with those celebrity kids.”

Fisk’s work as a production designer and art director means he is constantly paying attention to his surroundings. “When I work on films [inspiration] it comes from locations, stories or people I meet,” Fisk explained. “You never know where it’s going to come from… inspiration comes from everywhere, you just have to keep an open mind.” He cites paintings, including the work of Edward Hopper, as a special inspiration for his work.
