Captain Marvel
Captain Marvel is a 2019 superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel. It is the 21st installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and was produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, with a screenplay by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, the film stars Brie Larson alongside Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Annette Bening, Clark Gregg and Jude Law.
Set in 1995, the story follows Carol Danvers as she transforms into Captain Marvel amid a conflict between two alien civilizations that puts Earth in danger.
Development on Captain Marvel began in May 2013 and was officially announced in October 2014 as Marvel Studios’ first female-led superhero film. Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve were hired to write the script in April 2015, drawing inspiration from Roy Thomas’ “Kree-Skrull War” comic book story.
Brie Larson’s casting as Carol Danvers was announced at the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con, and Boden and Fleck were hired as directors in April 2017. Robertson-Dworet was later hired to rework the script, and the remaining cast members were assembled before the recording.
Principal photography began in March 2018 in California following initial location shooting in January, and concluded in Louisiana in July 2018. To reflect the film’s 1990s setting, Jackson and Gregg’s looks were digitally altered during post-production.
Captain Marvel premiered in London on February 27, 2019, and was released theatrically in the US on March 8 as part of the MCU’s third phase. It was a significant financial success, grossing over $1.1 billion worldwide and becoming the first female-directed superhero film to cross the $1 billion mark.
The film ranked fifth at the global box office for 2019 and held the position of the 23rd highest-grossing film of all time during its theatrical run. Critics generally praised the performances, especially Brie Larson. The sequel, titled The Marvels, is due out on November 10, 2023.
