Steve was born in Brownsville, Brooklyn on July 8, 1935 to Max Liebowitz and Hellen Liebowitz, both Jewish. Max is a cantor and a painter. Steve first showed his talent for singing as a child in the synagogue.
When he was a teenager, he began studying music and learning to play the piano and saxophone. At the same time, he started writing and arranging songs. Steve returned to singing when he entered Thomas Jefferson High School, and since he was serious about his career, he took singing lessons.
