The Sun revealed that Derek is fighting for his life after suffering a massive heart attack.

Kate and his family have been keeping a 24-hour vigil over the former political adviser who fell ill with Covid 2020.

Three and a half years later, Derek is still battling numerous health issues. The virus caused inflammation of the brain, kidney failure and damage to the liver and pancreas.

Kate is said to be preparing her children for a heartbreaking Christmas without their father Derek at home.

After stepping down as host of GMB, Kate will replace Ranvir on Thursday’s show.

She replaced Lorraine this week but told viewers: “I’m getting up a bit earlier tomorrow because I’m going to bring you Good Morning Britain.

“Louise Minchin will be here in the main seat. Meera Syal will join her here in safety.”

Derek was first rushed to hospital with Covid in March 2020.

After falling into a coma and being put on a ventilator, he spent 13 months in hospital, making him Britain’s longest-serving victim of the coronavirus.

One brain scan last year showed white spots, which are commonly seen in patients with vascular dementia.
