Tipper Gore Biography and Early Life
Tipper Gore was born Mary Elizabeth Aitcheson in Washington, DC on August 19, 1948. Her mother was Margaret Ann and her father was John Kenneth “Jack” Aitcheson, owner of J&H Aitcheson Plumbing Supply and a plumbing contractor.
She was raised by her grandmother and mother in Arlington, Virginia after her parents divorced. She attended St. Agnes School, a private Episcopal school in Alexandria, Virginia. She later attended Garland Junior College before transferring to Boston University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1970.
She then earned a master’s degree in psychology from Vanderbilt University’s George Peabody College in 1975.

Tipper began her career as a newspaper photographer for Nashville’s The Tennessean. Even after her husband was elected to the United States Congress, she worked as a freelance photographer in Washington.
Then in 1976 she began campaigning for her husband Al Gore in the United States House of Representatives. When her husband was elected, she formed a group called “The Congressional Wives Task Force” to write and research all social issues. In 1985, Tipper co-founded the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) with Susan Baker, Pam Howard, Sally Nevius and the wife of the then US Treasury Secretary James Baker. The goal of the organization was to advocate the use of advisory labels for music, especially punk, heavy metal and hip-hop.
She decided to take action after hearing her one-year-old daughter sing Darling Nikki by Prince. While some people supported the group, others criticized it, claiming it was a form of sponsorship. Gore founded Tennessee Voices for Children in 1990 to promote substance abuse and youth mental health services. She also assisted her husband in his 1988 presidential campaign, allowing him to tour with Hillary and Bill Clinton during their 1992 presidential campaign.
