Tom Gores was born on July 31, 1964 in Nazareth, Israel. He comes from a large family with six children, and Tom is the youngest. His family moved to Genesee, Michigan when he was only five years old.
He attended Genesee High School, where he was a defensive back in football, a guard in basketball and a linebacker in baseball. He later attended Michigan State University, but due to financial constraints, he worked as a telemarketer and janitor to make ends meet. He graduated in construction management in 1986.

After finishing school, he helped found the wood-logistics company Ventech. In 1989, he and his wife moved to Los Angeles to run the company’s West Coast operations. That’s when he got his first job at Litigation Services Inc., where he worked on computer-generated recreations of car accidents for courtroom testimony evidence. Tom bought them for $200,000 and it only took him six months to make the company profitable. Between 1996 and 2001, he spearheaded 32 acquisitions, including Pilot Software, Rascal and Williams Communications. Platinum Equity bought PNA Steel in 2006 and sold it to Reliance Steel Aluminum Co. two years later for a profit of 512 million dollars. Tom bought The San Diego Union-Tribute for $30 million and sold it for $110 million two years later. By the end of 2009, Tom had facilitated more than 100 transactions through Platinum Equity. Platinum Equity and Tom bought the Detroit Pistons and their former arena, The Palace of Auburn Hills, for $325 million in 2011, which was considered a shock deal. He spent 10 million dollars to renovate the arena. After purchasing Platinum Equity Shares in 2015, Tom became the sole owner of the Pistons.
