Tommy Hilfiger was born on March 2, 1957. He is the child of Virginia and Richard. Elmira, New York, is where he was born. He was one of nine children in his family, and he was also the second child. His parents practiced Catholicism as a kind of religion. His father made watches and his mother worked as a nurse, so they belonged to the working class.
Elmira Free Academy High School was Hilfiger’s high school. Thomas earned his high school diploma in 1970. Thomas attended GST BOCES Bush Campus in Elmira for a time. Susan Cirona was lucky enough to have Thomas as her lover in 1976 as they were married in 1980. Thomas was working at the People’s Place in Ithaca at the time. Tommy Hilfiger spent the summer of 1969 working in the clothing business on Cape Cod. After that, Hilfiger decided to make the most of his life by saving up $150 to open a clothing store with two friends. They set up shop in the first Arena, with other facilities such as a hair salon and a record store. New York City supplied them with what they needed. Among the clothing items in the store were bell bottoms, peasant blouses and leather jackets.
Hilfiger decided to develop his own ideas after being unimpressed by their stock. Thomas had been running his company well for seven years when in 1977 his only store went out of business. He was doing so well though. At that moment, Hilfiger discovered a niche for business and commerce in the fashion design sector.
In 1979, he moved to New York, started a business there under the name Tommy Hill and assembled a design portfolio at the age of only 28. Here he was employed at Jordache Jeans. Going to and from India to learn more about his business helped this company grow beyond the dreams of many.
