Willie Mays was born in Westfield, Alabama, a formerly predominantly black town near Fairfield, in 1931. His father was Cat Mays, an outstanding baseball player for the local ironworks’ black team. .
On the other hand, his mother, Annie Satterwhite, was a talented basketball player and star track in high school. His parents were never married and divorced when he was only three years old. Mays was raised by a father who worked in a steel mill. In 1950, Mays graduated from Fairfield Industrial High School.

Mays’ professional baseball career began in high school when he spent a summer with Chattanooga ChooChoos in Tennessee. He then joined the Black Baron Birmingham of the League of Black Americans. In the tenth grade, he caught the attention of Black Baron’s manager, Piper Davis.
Davis taught Mays how to hit the bend and gave him the opportunity to play for the Baron after a few years. Several scouts were sent to check on Mays over the next few years. Many scouts wanted to sign Mays, but he chose the New York Giants, who signed him for $4,000.
Mays has enjoyed a lot of success in the minor leagues. He performed admirably in all his games, attracting the attention of a lot of people. However, he encountered some difficulties; some of his career choices were influenced by the color of his skin, which is not ideal for a young athlete.
