Who Was Kim Porter? All About Diddy's Ex and Mother of 4 of His Children

Sean “Diddy” Combs had four children with his ex-partner Kim Porter before her death in 2018.

The rapper and Porter first started dating in the 1990s while he was getting bigger in the hip-hop industry. Before she met Combs, Porter was already the mother of Quincy Brown, whom she welcomed in 1991 with producer Al B. Of course!. When Quincy was 3, Porter began dating Combs, who eventually raised him as his own.

Porter and Combs welcomed their first child together, Christian Combs, in 1998, but split just a year later, fighting for custody in court. The couple later reconciled in 2003, giving birth to twin daughters, D’Lila Star Combs and Jessie James Combs, in 2006. However, they parted ways for good in 2007.

On November 15, 2018, Porter was found dead in her home at the age of 47. An autopsy report later revealed that she died of lobar pneumonia.

“I don’t know what I’ll do without you baby. I miss you so much,” Combs wrote in a since-deleted Instagram post days after her death. “We were more than best friends, we were more than soul mates. WE WERE SOME OTHER S—!! And I miss you so much. Super black love 🖤.”

Now, Combs has come under fire as multiple women have claimed he physically and sexually abused them, including R&B singer Cassie. In March 2024, the Department of Homeland Security searched his home as “part of an ongoing investigation,” which came amid allegations of alleged sex trafficking in two lawsuits filed against him.

However, Combs has denied all allegations against him, confirming that he physically assaulted Cassie after a video of the 2016 incident surfaced in May 2024.

Porter was born in Columbia, Ga., on Dec. 15, 1970. After graduating from high school in 1988, Porter moved to Atlanta to pursue a modeling career, having started in the industry as a teenager.

Her career soon expanded from modeling to acting in which she starred in 2001 Brothers and in 2006 System from the inside.

Porter began dating Combs in the 1990s

When Combs met Porter, she had just joined Uptown Records, where he was doing A&R, with her ex-boyfriend, producer and singer Al B. Of course!.

“The first time I saw her, she was in the studio with her ex-boyfriend,” Combs said Essence in December 2006. “I wasn’t trying to yell at her or anything, but I was admiring her—her lips, her eyes, her mouth, her shape, her energy—and I was thinking, ‘I wish I had a girlfriend like that.’ ”

Porter began working as a receptionist in Uptown and by 1994, the two began dating, with Combs helping raise her son, Quincy. Soon, they said, they became inseparable Essence.

“We went out together, we ate together, we played together,” Porter said. “He’d want me in the office; I’d want him on my shoots. Our bond was so strong.”

In 1998, the couple had their first child together, Christian, but split the same year after Combs began an affair with Jennifer Lopez.

As Porter’s family and friends rushed to her side to support her, she recounted Essence that she didn’t have time to break down emotionally while caring for a newborn — but she kicked Combs out of their shared home.

Although he moved into a hotel, Porter said Combs kept coming over and seeing her and their son often, which was hard for her to handle. They eventually took their conflict to family court in Manhattan, but she continued to fight him over custody.

He would say he had to see his son, but I was at the point where my stomach would turn just looking at him, Porter said. “My feeling was, you’ve made this decision, now hang in there. I can’t repeat everything I said at the time, because it’s really not that ladylike. But I was very vocal about it.”

After they broke up, Porter entered into a new relationship with music executive Shakir Stewart in 2000, which reportedly angered Combs. According to the May 2024 report Rolling stoneDiddy allegedly smashed a chair over Stewart’s head while the two men and Porter were in Italy for LA Reid’s wedding.

“He left him bleeding on the floor of a hotel in Italy,” Stewart’s mother Portia reportedly said Rolling stone. “He had to have stitches and then [Combs] threatened him… ‘I’ll kill you’… Then I said you have to get out of this business. This man is crazy.”

Despite a turbulent relationship in the 1990s and an early something, Porter and Combs reunited in 2003 and welcomed their twins, D’Lila and Jessie, on December 21, 2006. Porter had a close relationship with each of her children, with Quincy saying to PEOPLE in April 2023 that he plans to continue honoring her legacy after her death.

“I’m a mama’s boy, so I have so much life to add to her life. And that journey hasn’t even started yet, which is the best part,” he said. “What my mother’s legacy represents is impossible to describe. It will soon come to life.”

Quincy also has a close relationship with his younger sisters, telling PEOPLE that he naturally took on the role of manager in their lives as they pursued their own creative paths.

“We don’t need any contracts, no papers, but I am my sisters’ manager,” he said. “I’m like an uncle-dad-manager-protector, I claim that. I want to be able to really guide them. I want them to really know the layers of everything you can do.”

Quincy became an actor and singer, even collaborating with his brother Christian, who makes music under the moniker King Combs. Meanwhile, D’Lila and Jessie graduate from high school in 2024.

Porter publicly split with Combs

After welcoming their twin girls, Porter left Combs for the last time in July 2007. While pregnant with the twins, she learned Combs was also expecting a daughter with her friend Sarah Chapman, a girl named Chance who was born in July 2006. years.

“In ending this relationship, I have made a decision that was in the best interest of myself, Sean and our family,” Porter said in a statement at the time of the split. “We will remain friends and devoted parents to our children.”

She told more about her decision in an interview for Essence, sharing that she found out Combs got pregnant by his girlfriend, not him. Although she was hurt by his betrayal, she said that she was more hurt that he didn’t admit it and that he didn’t tell her himself.

“It’s not an original script. He’s not the first man to cheat,” Porter said. “He’s not the first man to have a child out of a relationship… But at this point in my life – now I have girlfriends – it’s a different agenda.”

She added that Combs eventually told her about his infidelity – but only after the twins were born.

“He told me that he might have put himself in a situation and he might have fathered another child out of a relationship, and I said, ‘Really? Well, I already knew. I’m glad you decided to be a man,'” Porter said. “I said, ‘Dude, this is so wacky I can’t even respect you right now.’ And as for me, when the respect is gone, I don’t listen to you anymore.”

She died in 2018 from lobar pneumonia

Although the exes had a public breakup, Porter and Combs have remained friendly throughout the years, attending events to support their children together. However, in November 2018, Porter died suddenly of lobar pneumonia.

She was found dead in her home after Los Angeles County officials responded to a death investigation at her home in Toluca Lake, California.

Porter is buried in her hometown of Columbus, Ga. where a public funeral was held at Cascade Hills Church. Acclaimed Pastor TD Jakes led the service which was attended by over 100 people.
