In February 2022, Seaman Kyle Mullen graduated from Navy SEAL/Basic Underwater Destruction training and later passed away. Ernst joined the Navy in August 2009 and, among many other honors and medals, received the Silver Star, the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, and three combat ribbons. The Navy is investigating the incident and declined to comment further until complete.
