On Saturday, September 16, 2023, the body of third-generation police officer Ryan Clinkunbroomer was discovered in his patrol car. According to police reports, he was shot dead. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has since arrested a suspect in the deputy’s murder. After an hour-long standoff in Palmdale on Monday, September 18, LA Sheriff Robert Luna said police have taken the alleged shooter, Kevin Catane Salazar, into custody. Sheriff Luna was heard saying in a video posted on the department’s Facebook page, “Thirty-six hours after our deputy’s murder, the men and women of our department arrested the suspect early this morning.”
He praised “brave” neighborhood residents for their help, which eventually allowed homicide investigators to identify the culprit. Officers used chemical weapons, and the subject eventually surrendered, Luna added. “Our Special Enforcement Bureau deputies were so professional that they gave the suspect enough time to surrender peacefully,” Luna continued. “Our deputies gave this guy an opportunity to amicably surrender. The sheriff said, “That’s not the right our police officer over here got three days ago. Yessica Salazar, the suspect’s sister, said it was simply to raise awareness, not to justify anything.
“He had a mental illness. He heard voices. We tried to help him. In other words, we just wanted it to be known that he is not a coward. He was acting irrationally because of his schizophrenia, she continued. Clinkunbroomer “was ambushed while performing routine patrol duties” and “in full uniform, driving a marked patrol vehicle,” the police agency said in a press release.
