Whoopi Goldberg Says Hatred for Her 1993 Oscars Look Prevented Her from Dressing Up: ‘It Hurt My Feelings’

Whoopi Goldberg reflects on what could have been with her wardrobe.

In an interview with Page Six Style at the Fashion Group International Night of Stars Gala on Tuesday, View co-host, 67, reflected on how the outfit she wore to the 1993 Oscars changed her fashion trajectory forever.

According to Purple star, “everybody hated” her outfit.

The EGOT winner arrived at the Oscars dressed in a daring color combination — he chose a lime green and dark purple jumpsuit. The top featured a bolero-style jacket, and in addition to the pantsuit, the bottom of her outfit included a skirt.

Goldberg’s shoes and chandelier earrings kept the color green and deep purple as she posed for pictures on the carpet.

Her look was reminiscent of the wardrobe she later wore in the 1997 TV adaptation of the film. Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella where she starred alongside Brandy and Whitney Houston as Queen Constantine.

Goldberg said that critics’ responses to her choice dampened her confidence at the time.

“It hurt me, I’m not going to lie. It hurt me,” Goldberg said at Tuesday’s gala, where she accepted the American Icon award.

“It stopped me from dressing up for a very long time. You have to remember, at the time they would say things and you’d think, ‘Do I really look that funny?’ ” she continued.

The Sister Act the star explained that her bold look was inspired by Lucille Ball’s character in the 1950s sitcom I love Lucy.

“Lucy would always go out in these great ensembles. And I thought, ‘I’d love to wear that!’ And green is not a color I would normally wear, let me try it!” she said.

Despite harsh criticism decades ago, Goldberg claimed she would “absolutely” rock the outfit one more time if given the chance.

During the May 2020 episode of the series ViewGoldberg commented on commenters who had a problem with her wearing a particular item of clothing again.

“People give me a hard time about the fact that I’m still wearing this red and black checkered thing,” she said, pointing to a buffalo check jacket she previously wore on air. – People say I wear it too much.

“Look at me. Do I care?” Goldberg asked before offering a simple explanation. “No. Because I’m comfortable in this bad boy!”

“My weight fluctuates. And if it’s going the way it’s going, I want to feel good in whatever I put on,” Goldberg said. “There are so many people who think they can’t be hip, but not with DUBGEE. You can be whatever you want.”
