Why Charlie Puth Doesn't Have a 'Dream Collab' in Mind Ahead of His Next Album (Exclusive)

Although previous Charlie Puth collaborations have resulted in songs like “See You Again,” “We Don’t Talk Anymore” and “Marvin Gaye,” the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter says he’s not thinking about a big name for his next hit partnership.

“There’s no such thing as a dream collaboration,” he tells PEOPLE when asked if he has a possible collaborator on his bucket list. “But the dream — one of the dreams — is to work with someone who’s really talented but just hasn’t gotten the chance yet, and their dreams are coming true or starting to come true as a result of our collaboration.”

“That’s better for me than any collaboration with a big artist or someone I just selfishly want to work with,” he continued. “To help someone else and make them realize that they were capable of it all along.”

In the spirit of giving back, Puth recently partnered with BIC ahead of the back-to-school season and hosted a Branded Creative Camp in New York for students and teachers on Wednesday, August 7th. Inspired by the brand’s four-color ballpoint pen, Puth led four activities: journaling, making beats, drawing album covers as well as performing live.

Looking back on his early days as a songwriter, Puth still remembers how he wrote his first song.

“I remember it was in G minor and I was 7 years old when I wrote it,” he recalls. “It was just a melody, no lyrics or anything. I still have that in my head to this day. I still haven’t used it. Maybe one day I will, but for me it always kind of starts with the melody. It’s never been a lyrical thing, but that’s obviously changed over the maybe 20 years I’ve been doing this.”

In May, Puth released “Hero” after some encouragement from Taylor Swift on her recent track “The Tortured Poets Department.”

“My new song HERO is about when you see someone you love hurting, destroying the things in your life that are good, but you just can’t save them,” Puth wrote in an Instagram caption announcing the track. “It’s one of the hardest songs I’ve ever had to write, but I wrote it in the hopes that you’ve been through something similar in your life and that it can fill the Void for you like it did for me.”

“I’m so excited to share my next album with you, especially this song because it’s a great showcase of what’s to come. I’ve never released a song like this before – it’s very different for me, but I want to thank @taylorswift for letting me know musically that I can’t keep this on my hard drive anymore,” he added of the “Cruel Summer” singer, whose name was dropped from Puth on her last album.

However, Puth told PEOPLE that the latest track won’t appear on his next album — he’s currently working on a project that will “probably” drop in 2025.
