Demi Lovato doesn’t let the negative side of social media get to her.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE tied to her partnership with Xeomina, the “Sorry Not Sorry” singer, 31, talks about how her relationship with social media has “evolved” to the point where she’s no longer bothered by the critical comments she reads about alone online.

“My relationship with social media has evolved over the years from looking to the internet for validation to not looking at internet comments at all. If I happen to see something negative, it doesn’t affect me like it used to,” she said. he says.

“And I don’t know if it’s just age or how many years I’ve been in the public eye, I just don’t let it follow me like it used to. It doesn’t have the power over me that it used to,” Lovato continues. “And it’s really refreshing, and it’s like I don’t mind what other people have to say about me.”

Their new approach to social media, Lovato says, feels “really liberating.” While they continue to post and interact with their fans, they like to “keep a positive attitude” and avoid “deep diving into the comments section.”

Lovato says they even have “compassion” for her online critics because they recognize the deeper causes of negativity.

“I understand that people who comment mean things have no awareness or lack self-love and respect because anyone moving from a higher sense of good will not comment anything like that on someone else’s page,” she said. explains.

“And if they really love themselves, they don’t focus on other people,” adds the two-time Grammy nominee. “So I have sympathy for the haters on the internet too.”

Elsewhere in her conversation with PEOPLE, Lovato opened up about their decision to get injections in their early 30s.

“I have always believed in making decisions that empower, [keep you] true to yourself and will help you look and feel your best,” explains the “Cool for the Summer” singer, who incorporates Xeomin — an anti-wrinkle injection used to improve the appearance of frown lines — into her beauty routine every three months. “It gives me the results I want while still looking like me.”

They add that they have no qualms about banning their beauty routine, believing that they are “removing the taboo” from procedures like Xeomin.

“I’m always transparent with my fans and this is something I wanted to share. It normalizes it,” Lovato tells PEOPLE about getting the shots. “It’s all about what makes you feel like your best self. Don’t listen to the skeptics. Do what makes you feel comfortable in your own skin.”
