Kevin Smith Took Baby Daughter to Dogma Premiere Dressed as Angel as a 'Thousand People' Protested Outside (Exclusive)

As the religious satire turns 25 this year, Smith recalls attending the premiere of the cult classic at the New York Film Festival with his daughter Harley Quinn Smith and wife Jennifer Schwalbach Smith.

When the family got to Lincoln Center, “We got out of the car and we had this little set of angel wings [on Harley]” Smith, 54, says of her daughter, who is now 25 but was just 3 months old at the time.

Speaking about some of the film’s controversial themes, he adds: “We get out of the car, a thousand people are protesting, holding a huge statue of Mary and praying the rosary and yelling at us and stuff.”

“So that’s the world she was born into, man,” Smith says.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly in a career retrospective published last month, Smith recalled receiving “400,000 pieces of hate mail and three credible death threats” after the publication Dogma.

“The movie featured a rubber poop monster,” said the writer-director-actor, who also appeared as Silent Bob (in Jay Mewes’ Jay) in several of his films. EW. “Can you imagine being that mad about a movie with a rubber poop monster?”

Some people were offended by the director’s disrespect for Catholicism and religion. Among the hateful messages was an anti-Semitic letter that read: “‘…we’re coming there with shotguns,'” he recalled. EW.

“I hope whoever wrote that, that message, has found peace,” Smith said.
