Charlie Dimmock rose to fame as one-third of the presenting team of the BBC horticultural show Ground Force.
The green-fingered host has hosted the show alongside Alan Titchmarsh and Tommy Walsh since 1997 and drew an average of 12 million viewers at its peak.
But in 2002, Alan decided to leave the series and three years later the BBC canceled it. But why did the popular show end?

Why did the BBC abolish the ground forces?
2005 Deck landing The BBC was shut down shortly after the government ordered the broadcaster to stop producing standard programmes.
The broadcaster’s CEO at the time, Mark Thompson, said the show had “go through its natural lifecycle”.

“When it came out with The Lockers, they were very fresh and original shows,” he said. “But when a show is nearing the end of its natural lifespan, it’s very important to continue before it becomes exhausting for the public.”

“I think the public will be furious to see the BBC beat a horse to death.”

While there’s no indication that the show might one day return, even if it does reboot, Charlie said she won’t be participating.
The presenter said in a 2014 interview: “Today, it’s all just baking on TV. “But if they bring the Army back, it won’t be me and Tommy – we’re all too old!

“And if you can see me now, my hair is pulled back and I’m out in the garden making compost. The whole sex symbol is actually a bit funny.”
Why did Alan Titchmarsh leave the Army?
In 2001, Alan Titchmarsh announced that he was leaving the show. In a statement, he explained that after 50 performances, he decided it was time to move on.
“When I made 50 shows, I thought it was time to stop, but they recklessly continued. I agreed to do 16 more shows, then I went. That’s it,” he said.

Are Ground Force leaders friends?
Charlie Dimmock talked about the close friendship between the cast of the series.
In an interview with Warrington’s Guardian back in 2016, the garden designer explained that after the first two seasons, the trilogy had become “like a family”.

“When we started filming, we were polite to each other in the first two seasons, but in the third we were like a family,” she explained. “My primary memory of the Ground Force is a lot of laughs. It’s the same team week in, week out, and the same production and crew. You know what it’s like when you work with it. a group of people and everything went well.”
