Arrest of Lucy Letby
To prevent the press from distinguishing between the alleged victims of the attempted infant murders – five boys and five girls – District Judge Nicholas Sanders of Warrington Magistrates’ Court invoked Section 45 of the Criminal Procedure Act.
On November 4, 2020, the police reported that all the affected parents of the babies had been supported by officers and had been fully informed of the developments. She was taken into custody for the third time on Tuesday in connection with an investigation into the deaths of pediatric patients at the hospital, which began in 2017.
Police detained the nurse twice – once in 2018 and once in 2019 – but she was released on bail while investigators continued their work. Her home in the Blacon area of Chester was also investigated by police following her earlier arrests.
The nurse expressed her concerns for the infants in an interview with the Chester and District Standard newspaper in 2013. In addition, it requires different types of assistance.
Lucy Letby worked as a student nurse on the pediatric ward during her three years of nursing school. Later in 2011, she obtained a certificate in pediatric nursing from the University of Chester. After graduating from medical school, Lucy began working at the facility, according to Lucy.
Why did Lucy Letby do this?
It is possible that Lucy Letby will never fully explain why she killed and attempted to kill newborns at the hospital where she worked. But during the nurse’s 10-month trial at Manchester Crown Court, the prosecution presented a number of potential motives to the jury.
Neonatal nurse Letby, according to prosecutor Nick Johnson KC, allegedly enjoyed “playing God” by injuring the infants and was then the first to inform her colleagues of their fall.
She also said things the prosecution called “harbingers of doom” as some of her victims began to get worse. She told doctors after her latest murder in June 2016 that she was “not going to get out of here alive, was she?” Soon after, the little boy of the trio died.
She knew what was going to happen, Johnson told the jury. She had an advantage. She was satisfied with the situation. She predicted events that she knew were inevitable. She was basically pretending to be God.
According to parents and staff on several occasions, Letby behaved in an unusual way when the number of babies was rapidly decreasing. Child I’s parents told authorities they remember the nurse “smiling and talking about how she was present [Child I’s] the first bath and how much she loved it” when the baby passed away after many of Letby’s attacks.
Letby told Johnson that she seemed to “get a thrill out of what you were watching, the sadness and despair in that room.”
Letby also searched for the victims’ families on Facebook. The prosecution argued that she often sought out several of them in quick succession, perhaps seeking grief one at a time. She looked for them on the days their infants died, and even on Christmas. The nurse said she would be looking for a variety of people, not just the parents of the infants on the ward.
The nurse has consistently denied prosecution claims that Letby had an affair with a married doctor who worked at the Countess of Chester Hospital, who cannot be named for legal reasons.
