Why Don McLean Says He's Worried for 'Monster Star' Taylor Swift

Don McLean is worried about “monster star” Taylor Swift.

In an interview with UK standard on Sunday, Aug. 18, the “American Pie” singer, 78, opened up about his concerns about how fame could be affecting the “Fortnight” musician’s mental health.

“She’s a person who is an example of what talent and really hard work can achieve,” McLean said when asked about Swift, 34.

The “Vincent” artist continued, “A lot of people think show business is just ‘Oh, you’re so gorgeous, you should be a star,’ Taylor Swift was a star for 15 years before she became a monster star, the size of a galaxy for God’s sake .”

McLean also noticed how hardworking she was.

“She works all the time and she does everything she does better than everybody else, whether it’s video or performance or songwriting or records or whatever, she does it all, just better than everybody else and it’s really interesting because everything from those other actions are suddenly old-fashioned,” he said.

McLean said he hopes Swift will “stay happy” in the spotlight, before reflecting on his own experience in the music industry.

“Show business and fame – as Elvis said ‘fame and fortune’ – and I’m very lucky to have had that,” he said. “I know how to do it. I have a lot of interests and they keep me going. I don’t go around thinking ‘man, why don’t I have this?’ Or ‘Why do I not have that?’ it’s the fastest way to be unhappy that I can think of.”
